+CdAGeoGeeks Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 The cache was good; the circumstances of it's removal were heinous. My link Not picking sides here, but we expected this. Wish we could have found it first. Quote
+gpsfun Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Not passing judgment either, but I had no idea that the shock waves from recently revealed events would extend all the way to geocaching. The ripples will continue for quite some time. Quote
+JL_HSTRE Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Did the CO feel the statue was no longer appropriate given the recent tarnishing of the person's legacy, or has the statue itself been removed by the college due to such tarnishing? Quote

Mr.Yuck Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 the statue was removed http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8188530/joe-paterno-statue-removed-penn-state-university-crew-site The removal of the statue was all over the news. I had no idea it was a virtual cache though. I'll make no statements on either side of the issue. Quote
Keystone Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 As a reminder, this thread is for talking about the archival of the cache. There's at least one thread in the Off Topic forum where folks can discuss current events in the news regarding this cache location. Please post in the correct place. Quote
+CdAGeoGeeks Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 Thanks for moving this NJAdmin. I guess I always considered Pennsylvania as New England rather than a MidAtlantic state! Quote
Mr.Yuck Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 (edited) Thanks for moving this NJAdmin. I guess I always considered Pennsylvania as New England rather than a MidAtlantic state! Don't worry about it, the only time in several years that any topic in the Mid-Atlantic forum exceeded 10 posts was when a teen from Philly threatened to place a power trail on a busy New Jersey County Route with no places to safely pull over for the caches. I am concerned about one thing, and it is from the Geocaching perspective. I've heard that once virtual caches are archived, they can never be unarchived. What if there was a successful public campaign to put the statue back? Or move it to another less conspicuous location on Campus, or even somewhere else in town? Would those be unusual enough circumstances to bend the rules? Edited July 25, 2012 by Mr.Yuck Quote
Keystone Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 No, but a future point of interest could be featured in a Waymark or Challenge. Quote
+lamoracke Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 had no idea that the JoePa statue was a virtual til I saw this topic. Even feels more real now! Quote
