TheCacheSeeker
I know the name, and the general area, but forgot the cache owner's name and the GC Code. Any comments? Edited July 23, 2011 by TheCacheSeeker Quote Link to comment
GOF and Bacall
If you know the general area look for some of the people who have found the nearest caches and see if it is on their found list. Quote Link to comment

That's what I have done. Especially searching the histories of long standing cachers. It is easy to spot them since they are crossed out. Quote Link to comment

+Sol seaker
Why is it you want to search for it? Some caches were archived for reasons like they were abandoned. But other caches have been archived because they were illegal, on private property, the neighbors were complaining about the traffic, etc. This is why it's best not to search for an archived cache unless you've got a really good reason. At Groundspeak Headquarters they say they get about one complaint a week about a geocache somewhere. I suppose if it's a legitimate complaint it may be archived. Or sometimes I know they archive them just to not bother the neighbors. It's good to not give geocaching a bad name. Quote Link to comment

If the OP is talking about searching for a geocache, that is looking it up on the website, I completely disagree that it is a bad idea, and for the exact same reasons that you give. Edit to add: I just re-read this post, and while I said exactly what I meant, I realize the second part might be confusing. I disagree that searching on the website for archived caches is a bad idea. Being able to see that a previously placed cache in a spot was archived because "they were illegal, on private property, the neighbors were complaining about the traffic, etc" would be an extremely useful tool for those who might be considering placing a cache in a certain spot.
