Loading Nuvi Problem

Hello fellow cachers,

I have used my old 200 series Nuvi to go paperless caching with no problem. I used GSAK to load the caches with the full description, cache hint and 4 or 5 previous logs. I just purchased a Garmin Nuvi 1490. I loaded my pocket query in GSAK, sent the files to the new Nuvi and opened them just fine. The only thing that was missing was the previous 4 logs. Hmmm? What's up with the new unit? It worked fine with my old one. I really like to read the previous logs while out caching so we are not hunting one with 4 previous DNF's or maybe get lucky and find an additional hint in the logs. Can anyone help me fix the no previous logs problem? Thank you in advance.

How are you using GSAK to load them. A macro or just going to send to GPS? Also when you switched to the new unit did you change the model under GPS->Setup?

By macro, and I just changed the geocaching.com gps setting. Is there a GSAK device setting I need to change. It finds the device when the POI loader uploads the caches.

Which macro are you running?

What Garmin model did you select for the 1490 in the macro, if there is a choice?

Finally : is there more than one log loaded in GSAK for that cache you were looking at? (sorry, obvious, but needs to be asked to get it out of the way)

When I loaded my old NUVI with GSAK, I clicked Run Macro as you have to with all GSAK transfers, then the usaul poi loader appears to finish the cache dowload to the NUVI. The pocket query that I open with GSAK always has had the logs, hint and cache description on a gpx file. Not just one log. I

If it worked just fine when I did the same thing to load the caches with my old NUVI, why isn't working with my new NUVI? I am not a technical expert by no means, but I knew enough to make it work before.

Thanks

I'm asking those questions to find out what is different, but first, to answer your question about how the macro works, and what may be different.

First, I'm assuming you're using the Pilotsnipes macro from http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com - is this correct? If not, can you tell me where you downloaded the macro from? It would be a great help in figuring out what may have gone wrong.

What the macro does is that it consolidates all the information in a geocache entry in GSAK, and consolidates them all into the description part of a POI entry. The maximum length of this field is specific to the unit. I've not been able to find out what the limits are for different units, and I don't have a 1490 to experiment with. They range from 11000 characters on the 2xx, to 20000 on the 8xx. I got these numbers out of the macro itself.

When generating the cache entry in the POI, anything after that limit gets left out.

The possibilities are:

1. The cache description is so long, together with the log entry, it exceeded the character limit for either your GPS model allows for either internally, by the macro, or by the POI loader.

2. That cache entry only has 1 log entry

If you can provide more information, I'll have more questions to ask to narrow this one down.

Yes, I am using the using the Pilotsnipes macro from http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com

I checked numerous cache descriptions on the new nuvi and all of them end with the hint, no previous logs regaurdless of how long the cache description was. If it has a real short description, no hint, still no logs.

I hope this new improved NUVI is as good as the old 205 model. Thanks for trying to figure this one out.

Which version of POI Loader are you running? Don't think this is the issue, but would like to know for sure.

Can you tell me what is the setting you picked in this screen for "My Garmin Model"?

Can you pick just one geocache (using the filter function) and just load that one into the Nuvi? Let me know which geocache is that (so that I can try to replicate it on my end). Tell me what you see on the Nuvi, and what you see on your PC when you select from GSAK Menu "Waypoint -> Delete a log" (you can cancel out of that without deleting any logs, don't worry).

I will have to check it when I get home tonight. I don't see an option for Garmin 1490 on "My Garmin Model" on GSAK. Hmmm? Hope that doesn't do me in there. I am currently using the most up to date POI Loader. I will get back with you hopefully later this evening with the single cache. thanks.

The model doesn't really do much - mainly set the limit on length of the text. Set it to 8xx for the maximum 20000 characters. If there's a problem you can always work back.

I've never understood the requirement to use only 2.5.2 POI Loader by Pilotsnipes. I suppose it could be a problem, but let's cross that bridge when we get there. The easiest way to verify this is to send me the generated GPX, but that would violate the TOU. If we need to look into that, I will send you a dummy GPX (probably post it here so that others can see there's nothing malicious in it), you load it into GSAK, run it through POI Loader, and post the results here.

What do you get when you load directly from GSAK? I see that GSAK supports the 1490 and a POI loader or macro shouldn't be needed

You get the name and coordinates loaded into favorites.

I ran the loader thru 2x thru 8x and colorado and oregon, no luck. Still no logs. I even did a major garmin update on the nuvi.

I'm at work now, if I don't respond by Saturday please send me a message to remind me.

I will create a dummy custom POI file - very small, and in text, so that you can read it to make sure there is nothing malicious in there (not that I know of any way to put something malicious into a custom POI, but you can't be too careful). Replace the one generated by GSAK with this one and run POI Loader. See what gets written to the Nuvi.

What you need to do is to find where your system stores the file "Geocache Tourguide.gpx". Most of the time, this is stored in c:\program files (x86)\gsak\garminpoi or c:\program files\gsak\garminpoi, depending on whether you're running a 32 bit or 64 bit OS. Sometimes this is located in the user directory instead. To verify where POI loader is reading it from, run POI Loader (with your Nuvi connected) and go to the screen (5 or 6 screens down) where it asks you to "Please select the direcory where the data files can be found."

Go to that folder, edit the file "Geocache Tourguide.gpx" with notepad. Delete everything in there, and replace it with the text above, exactly as it is (use copy and paste). Save it. This file is regenerated every time the macro runs, so don't run the macro again until after you've written this file to the Nuvi. If you don't feel comfortable about deleting it, make a copy before you edit it.

Now run POI Loader, and write that 1 dummy cache into your 1490, and see what it shows you. There should be 1 cache and 5 log entries.

Darn notepad... *sigh*

Can you edit it to remove all the degrees symbol? There are 4 of them. I tested it with notepad, should work now.

Darn notepad... *sigh*

Can you edit it to remove all the degrees symbol? There are 4 of them. I tested it with notepad, should work now.

Alternatively, use this version:

It worked, loaded and sent to nuvi.

When I hit "more" info button on nuvi it brought up the logs but paced them all above the cache description and hint.

Now what?

Can you send me a screen cap from your Nuvi?

By the way, did you try with the 2.5.2 version of POI Loader to see if it makes any difference?

Yes, that poi loader version, still no logs. Sent you a message for the pics you wanted.

OK, sorry, I got confused myself. I didn't realize what it was you were telling me. Sorry, lots of things going on at work today, got distracted.

That file is not meant to be fed into GSAK. That file is meant to be fed into POI Loader. I mentioned that earlier, but when you said you imported it into GSAK, I completely failed to notice it.

In this test, we will skip past GSAK and the macro, and only test POI Loader.

To repeat:

1. Find where your system stores "Geocache Tourguide.gpx"

2. Open that file in notepad, and delete everything in it.

3. Paste the text into it

4. Save

5. Run POI Loader. Make sure it points to the file.

If you can't find the file, see post #16.

I looked at the photos. Other than the messed up HTML tags, the information look like they are where they're supposed to be. But let's try this one more time to confirm.

Even after multiple attempts I can only load the test cache via poi loader thru gsak, not just poi loader by it's self. Even with the version you want me to use. I won't allow me to pick the "Geocache Tourguide.gpx" file individually. It only leads me to a folder containing it, won't let me expand the file to get the single file.

I'll do two things tonight : I'll provide step by step instructions for replacing the GPX file for POI Loader, and I'll provide the GPX for you to load into GSAK.

My wife was having the same problem when she upgraded from the nuvi 200 to a nuvi 13xx. No matter how long(or short) the description, there were no logs. We finally solved that problem by changing the POILoader setting to place the hints AFTER the logs. She now gets the last 4 or 5 logs.

However, if there is a travel bug in the cache, she will not get the cache description. If there is no TB in the cache, everything loads correctly. We have not been able to over come that problem. The only thing that we could see in common with the HINTS and TB listing on the nuvi was the asterisks that precedes both. I talked to the Garmin guys at Geowoodstock IX and although they could not shed any light on the problem they did note it and assured me that they would turn it over to their engineers. Guess we'll see how that goes.

OK, if that's really the cause, it should be easily fixed.

Go to Macro, Run/Manage, and right click on the Nuvi macro. Right click and choose "Edit"

Search for "**Travel" (press ctrl-F, then type **Travel)

Remove the 2 asterisks before and after it.

$cacheinfo = "$cacheinfo<font color=#FF00FF>**Travel Bug(s)**$TravelBugs</font><br><br>"

becomes

$cacheinfo = "$cacheinfo<font color=#FF00FF>Travel Bug(s)$TravelBugs</font><br><br>"

Look for "****" just a few lines below, for hints.

	$hints = "<font color=#008000>****<br>Hint: " + $hints +"<br>****</font><br><br>"

becomes

	$hints = "<font color=#008000><br>Hint: " + $hints +"<br></font><br><br>"

If you feel like it, you can remove the asterisks for the disabled and archived caches, a few lines above.

Save it and run the macro again.

Can you give that a try and see if it solves the issue? (same for work71 - if this works it means you won't need to go through the tedious testing process)

Same thing happened with ours, if there is a bug, no cache description. Odd. But at least the logs are finally loading. That's a start. Thanks.

Okay, got rid of all the "*" in all the spots you told me to.

Now only this appears this example =

OnHi461/Tra/N/GC1RAZJ

Nothing else, no cache description, hint or logs. Oh well, what next?

Thanks.

Also, after dumping the old macro, gsak and poi loader, it still only lists the above example with the asterisk back in place. So how do I get anything back now????

*sigh* Kentucky is too far for me to go. Don't suppose you're planning on visiting California any time soon? :)

I'm not quite sure what you mean. You restored the old macro and description is still not appearing? Is this only with GC1RAZJ or all caches?

All caches. I replaced the corrected macro you suggested with the original one here, http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/garmin-nuvi-exportgpx.gsk

and nothing shows again but the example I listed above. On all caches also. That makes no sense since I replaced it with the original.

I figured out that I needed to switch back to nuvi2xxW as Garmin model type. Still will lose the caches with TB's on this new model. Hopefully Garmin will send out a fix eventually. Thanks for all that helped.

Sorry for not being able to help with this one. I think we can still get it fixed but I understand your frustration and not wanting to continue. I see two ways forward for anyone else who wants to try : either edit the macro to ignore trackables, or nuke the asterisks like in the previous example. I'm very surprised that choosing the "Nuvi 800" profile causes things to go so drastically wrong. I'll remember that in case someone runs into similar trouble in the future, or when I'm finally forced to upgrade my 6xx and 7xx series units.

Hi There...

I have just run into another problem with loading my Garmin Nuvi 750 with a file from GSAK. The POI Loader says it is an invalid file and terminates the process. Nothing gets loaded. This only happened recently and I don't think I made any changes to the programs so I don't know what happened. Has anyone had any problems like this?

I have just run into another problem with loading my Garmin Nuvi 750 with a file from GSAK. The POI Loader says it is an invalid file and terminates the process. Nothing gets loaded. This only happened recently and I don't think I made any changes to the programs so I don't know what happened. Has anyone had any problems like this?

I see four possibilities : corrupted macro, corrupted support files, configuration changed somehow, or geocache containing some offending data.

Can you also check what version of POI Loader you are using? Did you happen to update it recently?

If you can remember when it started happening, see if there are any recent geocaches that causes the problem. Also, check to make sure that the other 3 files in the garminpoi folder - the BMP and the MP3 - are not corrupted. Try to open them (in Paintshop and Media Player) to see if they would open. If there's anything wrong with them, delete them and the macro would recreate them.

If you suspect the macro is corrupted somehow (you can check the "last modified date" to see if it has been changed recently) you can replace it with the original.

Finally, if it is one or more recent additions that is causing the problem, you can do a "divide and conquer" method to find the offending cache, if sorting by date placed doesn't help.

First, filter to only your oldest cache, and see if that loads. If it doesn't, try another cache (pick a random one). If none of them would load, something is seriously wrong.

Assuming picking one or two old caches would load, try selecting half the caches in a filter. Try to load that. Next, pick the other half, and try to load that.

Ideally, one half would load, the other wouldn't. If there's more than one cache, it could be possible that both halves would fail to load.

Assuming a few caches are causing the problem, you'll need to iterate this until you narrow it down. Like I said, it is tedious.

If necessary I can try to recreate the problem - I have a 755T that should be fairly similar to your 750.

I did edit the macro to nuke the asterisks but didnt help. Oh using a 1450.

Look for the lines :

    # Load the bug(s)

   IF $d_HasTravelBug
       $TravelBugs = RegExReplace("&",$d_TravelBugs,"and")
       $cacheinfo = "$cacheinfo<font color=#FF00FF>**Travel Bug(s)**$TravelBugs</font><br><br>"
   ENDIF

The # in front of Load the bug(s) is a comment, meaning it is meant for humans to read and ignored by the computer. What you want to do is to comment the following 4 lines out by adding # in the very front.

    # Load the bug(s)

# IF $d_HasTravelBug
# $TravelBugs = RegExReplace("&",$d_TravelBugs,"and")
# $cacheinfo = "$cacheinfo<font color=#FF00FF>**Travel Bug(s)**$TravelBugs</font><br><br>"
# ENDIF

It doesn't matter if the # is the very first character in the line, or somewhere after that, as long as it is the very first character that is not a space or a tab.

What this does is to tell the script to not do any special processing if travel bugs are present.

Not sure if this will fix the issue you encountered though, since I don't have a 14xx model to experiment with. Thinking about finally upgrading to a 2450LM though.

Sure, figured it out just before you posted it( I just deleted from IF to ENDIF). But this does fix it. I have tried loading hints before and after logs and both ways show descriptions and logs.

Thanks so much Chrysalides. I hope this works for others and there model ##.

..Well.. this issue has been the scourge of my life the past week.. I have narrowed it down to the SYMBOLS/CHARACTERS your gps-device recognizes. With GSAK I narrowed down to removing one cache, which has been around over a year. However, someone posted a 'found' log recently using a symbol '😄' at the start of their log...this is what has hindered my loading of my GPX file to my Garmin Nuvi 205w... it is not capable of producing the 😄. Loading GPX files with GSAK gives me the latest 5 logs on my Nuvi when I view them. I have dealt with the POI Up-loader telling me that the GSAK created GPX file is invalid, After removing this particular log ( which GSAK is capable of removing while keeping all other logs and cache information ) I am able to load my pocket query just fine as I have in the past. Hopefully this post will help others that get stuck where I have been.
