  1. ..Well.. this issue has been the scourge of my life the past week.. I have narrowed it down to the SYMBOLS/CHARACTERS your gps-device recognizes. With GSAK I narrowed down to removing one cache, which has been around over a year. However, someone posted a 'found' log recently using a symbol '😄' at the start of their log...this is what has hindered my loading of my GPX file to my Garmin Nuvi 205w... it is not capable of producing the 😄. Loading GPX files with GSAK gives me the latest 5 logs on my Nuvi when I view them. I have dealt with the POI Up-loader telling me that the GSAK created GPX file is invalid, After removing this particular log ( which GSAK is capable of removing while keeping all other logs and cache information ) I am able to load my pocket query just fine as I have in the past. Hopefully this post will help others that get stuck where I have been.

  4. all of these posts helped a bunch, thanks for the input..to some up what I have grasped..this cache( well....X-Cache) does reside inside of a business with permission, much of the input needed to answer the questions is around on signs and what-not...most of which are ancient companies that no longer exist and billiard history that COULD be changed to such to avoid promoting any existing company as one user stated above.... I understand the two posts that would feel uncomfortable attempting this cache, That was one aspect I never notioned because I am in my comfort zone here and similar places.... I actually feel kind of ackward when there are muggles around when searching for caches outside...I would feel more comfortable inside like this proposed cache, I neglected to think that others may not...I thought that some of the 'out-of-my-element' feeling would be surpassed knowing that the owner has ok'ed this... And to the similar post...I always have a feeling of 'i'm being watched' and 'what is he doing' while i cache anywhere....I am in new england and have had to cover my footprints in the snow by making more when finding caches...I get many many looks and gazes...The first time I did an Inside cache, the employees did look at me funny, but when I started talking to them to answer some questions, they knew why I was there and more than happy to help.....anyways...the concensus on this after the posts is that this is a bad idea and the puzzle will be turned over to the owner to use at his whim (for my sake, I like to know the few hours of work and research I put into this was not done in vein), like stated, this would serve as a great scavenger hunt for a prize of a free draft (or something) on lets say ladies night....I will lay this to rest...but I am far from stopping my centerdale RI cache placement...I will start from scratch, and the only thing I can promise is that I am going to have to make my riddles harder due to the work I put in on this first one... ;-)....thanks everyone....
  5. I know I am still in the midst of progressing with my local reviewer for my cache listing to be published, but I have devised a fun cache within a local business down the street from me, and have talked with the owner of that business for permission to place the cache, as well as agreeing that no money will be involved in order to retrieve the cache. I know that walking inside the place, or having to interact with employees is a red flag for a commercial cache which stunts publishment. I was sure that we took out the principal or substantial intent of soliciting customers or generating commercial gain. I am trying to bring people in the geocaching community to experience my hometown, since the nearest cache resides past the outskirts of here. There is a clause listed (which was stated by the reviewer) that says there are rare exceptions to the commercial cache rule and am hoping to coincide with the reviewer with this. I was almost certain that involving no monetary transactions to solve this cache would have taken it out of the 'commercial cache' genre considering I always thought that something commercial had to involve commerce...(hmmmm...and this is where my debate on the guidelines begins)... any suggestions and comments on this would be much appreciated.....like stated, I am still awaiting the second response on my query to the reviewer with how I could get this published after the initial censure... and if all else fails, the work put into creating this puzzle cache can be turned into a fun activity like a scavenger hunt at the business for any given night (I will say the place serves food, drinks, and has activities to partake in....it would ruin half the cache if i told you where it was =)....)...I would love for the geocaching community to partake in this cache hunt if possible, I feel it would be a great addition to anyones to-find/found list, and am hoping that the 'I hid this, lets see if your clever enough to find it' matched with a high level of fun hold big weight in the decision to publish....thanks for letting me post...Spike
  6. I am a geocacher who also owns a CB in my truck...the difference in this day I find is that noone uses CB anymore.....on a rare occasion I will come across a conversation, but my antenna is lite because I do not drive a big rig, and its just for personal use....I find I use the NOAA weather band switch on my CB more often than the channels, which I use when geocaching particularly if I dont want to get caught in the 'middle of no where looking for a tupperware box in the rain'...at least the NOAA band helps me pack my bag correctly....on the CB note, I live in Rhode Island....One time I was driving north into Massachusetts to catch RT 90 to New York when an accident caused miles of traffic.... the CB was useful to know what lane to be in, and what and whereabouts the incident occured.... Besides that one instance, only when I drive down south do I find people still using the CB, and usually get some crazed drunk sounding trucker singing with his echo box and his 20ft tall antenna to blast out anyone else.....I figure Ch. 9 is still used for emergency, but it is a dying form of communication with cellphones around and about... and for the record, Im in my late 20's..... I grew up with a Household CB where my dad was 'the Galloping Gourmet' in Waterboro Maine, back when you knew everyone in town....
  7. so...I guess this would be a bit of feeback....Just on the new beta map...I am a fan....I have just glanced at it real quick, but I loke some of the options from what Ive seen, some being that it appears that the 'refresh caches' has been done with, I can move around the map freely and see the caches automatically, and only view the ones I want, like excluding earth caches from the map...it seems cool.....also....the switch of view is neat...I know I will be using the 'topo map view' due to one cache hike we attempted last fall just north of bartlett New Hampshire in the white mountains, where the sign said 2.8 mile hike (with many caches along the route, I believe there were 6 of the 7 on that trail we found)...anyways...we did not calculate that most of the 2.8 miles was UPHILL.....this topo view on the geocaching site seems like it will be full of use, at least from this cacher......One thing I noticed on the 'tiles' view on the side was the '?' (Unknown cache) is now called 'Mystery cache'....same concept..and I hope the 'blue ?' still stands for the same type of cache, I guess Ill have to find one to see...I usually think of caches that dont fit into any catagory of caches, or if they are 2 types in one (puzzle cache and multi-level cache)... From what Ive seen so far on the map, I like. Thanks for making the geocahing experience better .....One thing I do have trouble with is the FORUM....I find it extremly difficult to post/search/find posts within the forum...perhaps I just need to learn how to use it a bit better ( heck, I have this post on which is good....but felt foolish when I made my last post on paperless caching with a garmin 205nuvi and the helpful sites I found just to learn someone already had done so years before (I couldnt find it when I looked and searched the web on my own)...anyways...ya....keep it caching...
  8. ha...youre right..the geocaching.totaltechworld.com is the sight...i dont know why the /index.html doesnt work as a link...oh well...I guess when I looked up paperless caching in the faq and forums on the Groundspeak sites, i must have overlooked this or not seen the title. i stumbled on this via a search on google...anyways..happy caching..
  9. After scouring the web for information to apply geocaching to my newly received garmin nuvi 205w, I came across this site http://geocaching.totaltechworld.com/index.html. I know that this site is designated to the nuvi, but after following the walkthru I found this to be an very well put guide for : - A quick guide to the pocket query - setting up the geocaching swiss army knife program to my nuvi - using the poi uploader to transfer the cache info to my device - Using the garmin nuvi to view the caches This website within a matter of 10 minutes has morphed me from using printouts of caches to carry around, to just adding the information to my gps device. This site was a big help, and I thought I would post this in the forum so perhaps it can help out others too. Kodo's to Pilotsnipes for taking the time to make this guide.
  10. just got an email on to caches I am watching close by my house....I am very sceptical that these ' defenders' have found these, and just 'logging' them....particularly greystone park ri cache...If these defenders were true to their words they would have to pick up garbage bags upon garbage bags of solid waste between the 50 feet from the parking to the cache. I seem to pick up more trash going to these caches than these people...maybe someone(s) has a grudge of not getting picked at kickball long ago.??
