How do you know if your GPS can recieve CHIRP

Recommended Posts

Software and Compatibility

The only chirp-compatible units are the Garmin GPSMAP62/78, Oregon (300, 400 and x50) and the Dakota 20. The Colorado does not seem to be supported even though it features the wireless ANT protocol which chirp is based on.

The Colorado is supported in the latest firmware update, but according to this early review of Chirp, the eTrex line isn't even mentioned.

Go to The Garmin Chirp page, and click the tab that says "Compatible Devices."

Compatible products for this item are:

GPSMAP® 62st

GPSMAP® 78s

GPSMAP® 78sc

Oregon® 300

Oregon® 400c

Oregon® 400i

Oregon® 400t

Oregon® 450

Oregon® 450t

Oregon® 550

Oregon® 550t

Interesting. I have the Dakota 20. Is there a firmware upgrade to get the chirp to function? I am not aware of how to get the chirp to work. I have read the manual and didn't see any mention of chirp.

ETA: Found a video on the chirp and found the settings on my Dakota.

The eTrex units don't have the hardware to support the ANT protocol, so they can never be supported directly.

I guess in theory, an ANT dongle could be built that plugs into the eTrex, but I doubt that would ever happen.
