Witness post but no mark

Ever find the witness post but not the mark? Does it happen enough to not be considered rare?

This happened to me this weekend with FV0476.

There is a witness post very near the listed coordinates. The witness post and fenceline are a few feet further from the road centerline than the description implies so I widened my search because something has moved. Just couldn't come up with the monument/mark.

I had one where it was under about 6" of sandy dirt. Gave up the first time and then dug it out on the second visit:

And another where the surface mark was missing and the underground mark was at the bottom of a hole:

We have only run across this one time. It was at PA0163.

Our speculation was that grading or underground cable burial might have destroyed the mark but left the witness post. We searched per the description and probed all over but came up empty.

Yes, I remember missing one when I misread the bearing of the call to the witness post, and the monumentation style was one I hadn't seen before. It was a brass cap on a pipe, below grade with a threaded PVC sleeve and a plug screwed into the top: CG0868.

Yeah. There's a series (A through U 364) on Rte 209 between Stroudsburg and Milford PA set in 1978. Mostly disk on stainless steel rod. I've seen a number of the witness posts. The problem is that they are a bit underground, and this is the Delaware Water Gap NRA. No metal detectors or digging permitted. Most of the things in the original description have disappeared since the NRA bought the land. No telephone poles anymore.

Most places, I'm lucky to see witness posts. Here I can see the witness posts, but cannot find the marks. Oh, well.

Spotted a witness post last week that seemed new, but couldn't find a benchmark by the post and there was nothing in the NGS database at that location. FWIW, the witness post was up against a storm drain.
