Fledermaus
What does anyone know about this PDA? Can it be used for storing geocache pages etc.? It came with the charging stand, power & USB cables, manual and disc. The only thing it needs soon is a CR3032 backup battery. I found this working PDA at a local garage sale for $20.00. Was it worth it or did I waste my money? Suggestions about how to use it will be greatly appreciated. /\/(°w°)\/\ Edited June 15, 2010 by Fledermaus Quote Link to comment
+Indotguy
I use an Axim X5 400MHz PDA installed with GPXsonar and an older version of MS pocket Streets and Trips. It works fine for paperless geocaching. Quote Link to comment

I even got a bluetooth GPSr "puck" for it and still use it for Wherigo occasionally. You should be able to find several suitable options to allow you ot use that device for your paperless caching. +StarBrand
The first thing you will want to do is become a Premium member for just $30 per year so you can download all of the cache page details in a GPX file and open that file on the Axim for use out in the field. Quote Link to comment

One thing to be wary of is whether all the software goes poof on you if you run the batteries to empty (the X30 does - ugh). It takes a bunch of processing to get the pocket queries into the right format, and you need a PDA-compatible viewer. I used to use Cachemate (under $10) which was ok I suppose. But I'm very glad I punted on that a couple years ago. It's a much nicer experience using a modern Oregon 200 which you just drag'n'drop your pocket queries onto. The paperless field note uploads in itself is fabulous Quote Link to comment
+northernpenguin
Use cachemate, install everything to the storage card and leave the CAB files on the storage card so you can reload if the device loses it's memory in the field. I paired my X30 with a Bluetooth GPS and it worked just fine for me. I used to keep 5,000 cache databases on the memory card. Like the others have said though, when I switched to my Colorado for paperless caching, the experience was much better. I did keep using Cachemate for a while though as it was a lot easier to make detailed notes on the PDA - what eventually killed off my X30 was when I got a Windows Phone. Quote Link to comment
+The Kamikaze Clan
I have one of those at home. Descent battery time and both SD- and CompactFlash- slots are nice. The X3 is also OK. I have a bunch of those. Quote Link to comment
