+BulldogBlitz
As for them not being allowed. I explained in a note to the reviewer what it was. That it was a magnetic log sheet and the back is the log. It was posted. There for it must be okay. Just because a cache can be published, doesn't mean that it should be published. 4wheelin_fool
Here it is "NON BELIEVERS!" I got my email back, and it AGAIN confirms that MY CACHE, the is on green transformer box is OKAY TO BE THERE!!!!! Last time I was given information through a rep via his supervisor. This time information was given by a "Safety expert". SO, If this is not good enough for you, you can suck an egg. Dear Mr. Reiman - we are in receipt of your recent inquirty to our FirstEnergy website about the GPS treasure hunting game. I have checked with our Safety Expert about receiving permission to use the back of one of our green transformer boxes as a " hiding" site during your game. He advised that it would be OK as long as it does not cover any of OUR regulated decals and information labels. If you require any more specific information, kindly call our Safety Expert - Bill Stevenson - at 732-212-4166. Thank you and good luck with your treasure hunt game! - Elaine Vincent, Community Involvement Manager -- Response to your original message sent on 06/09/2010 12:32:15 AM -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Hello, I participate in a world wide GPS treasure hunting game. www.geocaching.com for more information. Basically some one will hide something and log the GPS coordinates on the geocaching.com website, and people with GPSr's seek them to find and sign the log book, then log their finds on the website. Currently there are over 800,000 world wide international. I am contacting you because I am seeking permission to hid one of these at a green transformer box. One of the main things about hiding one of these "cache's" is getting permission. What I wish to hide is a magnetic sheet painted the same color as the box. On the magnetic side is where people sign when they find it. It would be stuck to the side of one. Not in the front or back. It is something that the average joe would not notice, but a "geocacher" would immediately. No one would bother box in any way except to pull the sheet off, sign it, and put it back. In order to be able to hide this and have it listed on the site is permission to put it there. I have already spoken to some one from JCP&L and they said that it should be okay as long as it does not obstruct the front where the doors are, and is not on the ground in the way of it unless it is not within 10 feet of the front of the box where the doors are. Please visit the site to see what it is all about. Thank you! ----------------------------------------- The information contained in this message is intended only for the personal and confidential use of the recipient(s) named above. I asked the same thing that I asked the initial rep Patrick, and this time they were not as concerned with the opening of the box, and more about their required decals. At any rate, my cache does not cover any decals, and is not on the front or the door just the extra compliant. <--- My victory dance. I expect apologies, but understand they will only come from individuals who can be a bigger person. Great job in getting permission! Quote Link to comment
+thedeadpirate
Originally I posted a pic of my latest cache in the CCC thread. It was a green magnetic strip on a green transformer box. I had some people wig out about safety, and permission to have it there. Safety is not a concern because these boxes have to be safe to be on the ground, so it came down to permission. So I called, they weren't sure who I needed to talk to at first but a supervisor said it would be okay as long as it wasn't on the front, or blocking the door (in a nut shell) So Some one thought he needed to call me out on a bluff, but I had already ALSO emailed and was waiting for a reply. This morning it came and it was even better then my previous phone chat as a Safety Expert had been consulted and said that it was fine as long as it didn't cover any decals on the unit. Just out of curiosity, I called my cousin, who is a lineman, to find out what he thought about this. Basically, those boxes are filled with oil, just like their pole mounted counterparts. As long as the oil remains, there is no chance of being electrocuted. However, oil does leak out occasionally. When this happens, once the oil gets down to a certain level, the electricity, seeking ground, will go to the shell, which is grounded, and go boom. IF someone were touching the box at the moment that the box went boom, then they might be electrocuted. However, even then, if they are not well grounded (wearing thick rubber soled shoes, etc), the electricity will likely choose to go directly to the ground via the shell and not through the person. In essence, you have a much higher chance of being killed by lightning than by touching one of those boxes. As a side note, the issue with the 10' in front of the box is because when they must service those boxes they use a pole to open it and they need 10' of clearance to be sure the doors open properly. He did add that the boxes are much safer here since we get good rainfall and the boxes tend to be grounded better than they are on the west coast where it is drier. Quote Link to comment
knowschad
LoL. Sorry, got a little carried away as my email was even better then the chat on the phone. I think that's pretty cool, and I never doubted that you. Now, you should see if you can get some of the actual paint that they use on the boxes! Quote Link to comment

I think I did a pretty good job with what I could find. Actually made it near by. Local store was where I got the supplies. They let me take the spray paint caps out to match it. Spruce green is the closest they had to it. In the pic it stands out. In front of it, its not so easy to see. Hey Goebain, can you ask your cousin what the color of paint they use for the boxes?? +brslk
mchaos, You have my most sincere apologies. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong and in this case I was obviously wrong. I realize that just because I don't think it's safe that doesn't mean I am correct. Mostly I apologize for calling you a liar. You were telling the truth and I was ranting and raving like a fool. I may not agree with it being a good hide but as long as it's safe then who am I to judge? Congrats on getting permission for a creative hide. I harbor no ill feelings towards you and hope you will accept my apology. brslk. Quote Link to comment

+NYPaddleCacher
What's with the new avatar? The reason I ask is because I noticed a new poster that I saw in the forums that went be the handled of "Evil Cow Pie". At first I thought "Evil Cow Pie" also presumes that there might be be a "Warm and Friendly Cow Pie" but that didn't make any sense (okay, maybe "Warm" works), but then I saw your avatar and wondered that with a little color pallete change it might be usable as an avatar for that new poster. The new avatar is temporary. I saw the image and liked it. The blown up image has a caption of "smile" and if you look you will see that the corners of the mouth are being forced up and held in place with safety pins. It's a forced smile of epic proportions. Look, I can do it... (my email) Dear City of Columbus, I am a geocacher, interested in hiding a geocache (defintion goes here, www.geocaching.com). The location I am interested in is on top of the pole that extends above the street holding up the traffic lights at the corner of Hwy 182 and 5th St. The finder would have to climb up the pole and shimmy out over the road to find the cache, a section of schedule40 pipe capped at both ends, you know, to looks sort of like a bomb. Thanks in advance! Pork King (their reply) Dear Mr. King, The City of Columbus is fine with placement of your 'cache' for your treasure hunt game. The only stipulations we must enforce are a) the "pipe bomb" must not cover any of the traffic lights, and we ask that you request finders of the "treasure" to use a safety fall harness if they have one available, and not to block the intersection should they fall without a retraint. Good luck on your treasure hunt! I.P. Freely City of Columbus Light & Water Dept. Chief Engineer. Don't take me seriously! Quote Link to comment
