willyb87
So, I'm trying to do the "benchmarking: springfield" cache but I'm having trouble even getting started. I've been doing research on benchmarks but I can't seem to figure out how one would be able to find a benchmark when the PID number is not provided. This may be a really dumb question but any help would be awesome! http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...5b-e13bc3729536 there is the link the the geocache and the pictures of the discs are provided. Search it by zip code, then scroll through the descriptions. I found the second one, K 5 Reset on the fourth page. Quote Link to comment
Wintertime
Well, I imagine that all of the marks are somewhere in the vicinity of the cache, so I would start by clicking on "Nearest Benchmarks" on the cache page and look for the results that have the designated stampings. I saw a few of them just on the first page of results. Patty Quote Link to comment
+PFF
Excellent answer, Patty. There are some interesting challenges built into this cache (such as using a station with SCALED coordinates which are 300 feet off). However, giving the PIDs might have been a better introduction to benchmark hunting. -Paul- Quote Link to comment
2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
Try the easy way first.... go here and put the "designation" in the appropriate box and select the state (don't forget to click on the designation button) and then click "find benchmarks". The designation is what is stamped on the disk as in "SEMINOLE" or "N 343" etc. This will bring up a list of benchmarks with those names in the state you selected. You can then click on each one to see if it is in the correct area for the cache. Have fun. John Quote Link to comment
Bill93
If you search by designation, remember that the space between letter and number in many designations is significant for the search. Quote Link to comment
+Knight2000
I just learned that you can search by the stamping. The pictures seem kind of small to read the designation though. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_desig.prl Quote Link to comment
Difficult Run
You can also use NGS Benchmark Viewer by MonkeyKat/ScaredyCat. It's the best interactive benchmark website I've seen so far. ~ Mitch ~ Quote Link to comment

NGS Surveyor
Remember, the stamping on a disk and the official designation (name) are often not the same. Typically, the year stamped on a disk is not part of the station's designation. GeorgeL NGS Quote Link to comment

The nice thing about running the search on Geocaching.com, however, is that you can restrict the results to a single state. Patty Quote Link to comment
