Benchmark about to be destroyed

I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but if I know a BM disk is about to be destroyed, say due to an old bridge being torn down, should I be doing anything to recover it? I would be willing to work with the construction foreman to safely remove it, but would NGS want it back? Can a citizen legally keep a "destroyed" marker? Or does NGS want them destroyed along with the mount structure and I should take off my hat, hum 'Taps' and just walk away? Thanks.

Tie yourself to the bridge as a form of protest against the needless slaughter of helpless benchmarks.

Draw media attention to the reckless destruction of the endangered benchmarks and how little is done to pretect them from advancing urban sprawl. Propose a sanctuary for displaced benchmarks with proper habitat and food for them. Start a breeding program to repopulate the species and them release them back into the wild for all to enjoy.

You may even be able to get a grant to start an endangered benchmark foundation. Testify before congress.

Or you could follow the advice of the above posters. icon_smile.gif

The county surveyor would probably be the best person to contact to insure the protection of the monument. The mark would most likely be of most value to him and his office. You could also contact the Survey and/or Road Division of Public Works of the government agency that has jurisdiction of the road and bridge. (Such as the City if it's a city street, the county if it's a county road, or the State DOT if it's a State route or highway.) These agencies all have interest in the marks and will take measures to protect them.

If the destruction of the mark is inevitable, the agency that has jurisdiction over the construction (or destruction) of the bridge should take (and is probably in the process of taking) measures to protect it as a survey mark. However, that protection may include removing and relocating the mark. That would insure its integrity as a survey mark, but effectively destroy it as an NGS mark, unless it was reset by NGS standards and submitted to them.

Identify the owning agency of the bridge ie. City County State and contact the respective person ie. City Engineer, County Surveyor or State Highway Department. Often a bridge only comes out to be replaced by another in which case the new one was most likely designed using the Bench Mark as it was intended to be and the responsible agency is then aware of it as Bench Marks used for design are referenced on the plan. In many cases there is no requirement to replace it and a temporary was established for construction use.

According to the (Surveyeror's ) here and the NGS the marks are to be recovered, is what I was told.Especially if in their original Position, they want to reset off the old mark, that may be the Temporary, but the insructions for recovery read, something to the effects that a great deal of set up and transfer is necissary to establish the new Mark,(the) (RESET)

So is that why you might think that so many marks are destroyed, that is private companies that are hired to destroy these, have no Idea or care for the Mark?Or even what they are?

It is rather unfortunate that the actions of a few large companies are causing the wanton destruction of benchmark habitat. Pretty soon, these little critters will only be able to survive in isolated pockets and perhaps, because of the isolation, not be able to multiply.

Something should be done!
