POI file for Trig Points etc

Recommended Posts

I've uploaded to Trigonomy a new POI .csv file for use with a Garmin GPSr, containing location data for all known Trig Pillars, extant or destroyed, plus FBMs, Active & Passive Stations and other notable trig marks such as Curry stools, Concrete Rings, Fenomarks, Spiders, Phantom Trigs etc.

Where pillars have been converted to Blocks, relocated or replaced by another station this is indicated too, and the latest version adds a fair bit of extra detail:

* FB numbers for all pillars that ever had one

* Vanessas identified

* access problems flagged

* reports of damage (fairly serious only)

* toppled or leaning

* reason for loss if known

* details of replacement pillars

* stonebuilt, cylindrical, other shape irregularities

Where a pillar has been shunted to the edge of a field or behind the barn or whatever, co-ords relate to the new location, not the original point, and in some such cases, there are directions to help find awkward pillars.

(Also available here for other GPSr)

Any omissions or corrections to the usual address etc.

I downloaded some of these files in .gpx format with the intention of putting them into GSAK.

I found that, even though I selected the .gpx format from the drop down menu, GSAK wasn't having it. So I messed around with GPSBabel for a bit to try and convert a tab delimited set, but again, couldn't get very far. Am I doing something wrong please? Thanks in advance.

I tried to load the trig point file into GSAK but got an error. I have tracked it down to an invalid Unicode(i.e. non Ascii ) character at

Just get rid of the little Dots after FB Plate using a text editor such as notepad and it should load OK.

The immediate answer is that I don't know, but will try to find out. I've never had a great deal of success converting anything into GSAK-workable .gpx files, though it's straightforward enough the other way round. I always load POI files straight into my etrex via the proprietary Garmin POI loader.

I'll have a mess about with it tomorrow. If the worst comes to the worst & I can't find a way around it, I can just email you an export of my own GSAK trig database, which contains the same points anyway.

Thanks for that tip, I'll sort it asap.

The amended trigs file did just the trick - thanks!

Can I also ask - for the Hills file, where can I get a list of all the abbreviations for each hill please?

The data comes from the Database of British Hills, generally recognised as the most authoritative and complete listing of hills in Scotland, England & Wales. Some of the editorial team appeared on Countryfile a couple of weeks ago demonstrating their work, and they are scheduled to hold a press conference on 10th September which will result in a change to the SMC Munros list.

The classification codes themselves are here.

The Trigs POI file has been replaced today. There has been a significant change in the way it's produced, as it is now extracted from a GSAK database, rather than existing as a 'stand alone' .csv file. This will make future updates much easier - and less tedious - to produce. Much of the data itself has been updated, removing a number of minor errors and adding more detail and a few more stations.

Please let me know of any errors discovered in the field.

Regards,

Bernie

Hi Bernie

I have just downloaded the GPS Exchange file to put into GSAK - unfortunately GSAK reports that there are non UTF-8 characters in the file and the load aborts part way through. :anibad:

I'll be honest with you - it never occurred to me that it was possible to download the files as a .gpx, I just assumed people would download POI files customised for whatever GPSr they use. I'll have a look at that option & see what I can figure out.

thanks for the heads-up.

Now for the really stupid questions :anibad:

I have downloaded said file and installed them on my Orgeon but cannot seem to find them! Can I get them to show on the maps? I guess they are in POI's? I used Garmin POI Loader is that correct?

Also maybe not your field but some one might know. Is there a piece of software you can use to edit your POI's I seem to have casinos in France but none in the UK! Seems bit random local post office is shut but still listed that sort of thing...

So I can get rid of random rubbish?

Thanks for any help..

Ok, the simple answer to this is don't do it! Although .gpx is an available option from Poifriend, there's very little point in using it, because I have to upload the file as a .csv in the first place, so the added functionality of .gpx just isn't in the file to start with.

So either pick the POI option for your own unit, or if you want the full GSAK trig experience, PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy of my complete database.

Yes, download the simple 'Garmin' option & you'll be sent a .zip file containing a .csv list and .bmp icon - put these wherever you run the POI loader from.

With my Vista, running the Garmin POI loader automatically overwrites previously stored POI files. Don't know how it works with the Oregon. Presumably you can attach that model to a PC in USB mode & just examine the contents of the external drive?

Yes I can do that but do not want to remove all POI's just the ones I do not need. Having done a bit of googling to modify a GPI file which is basically what I want to do may or may not be possible...

Thanks for your help I seem to have found the bits I wanted... Next I will be logging ye old survey monuments :anibad:

The name that has a problem is Foel Lûs - about half way down the file. Just remove the funny character using Notepad and all will be well. I used the gpx file because I thought it would be the easiest way to load in GSAK.

The way I find these type of problems is to rename the file suffix to .xml and load into Internet Explorer. Normally it will then tell you where the file has an error. There may be multiple errors but it will only show the first so you have to fix by editing and try again.

POI loader always creates poi.gpi. The device will support multiple poi files so what I do is to rename the file after loading to the GPS. I am fairly sure this will work the same way for the Oregon and Vista/Legend. For simplicity I just have the commands in a windows batch file. For example

del E:\Garmin\POI\poi_trig.gpi

ren E:\Garmin\POI\poi.gpi poi_trig.gpi

Makes sense, good idea.

I have done this and have removed the "dodgy" character. It has now loaded into GSAK just fine.

Thanks though for the .csv file offer Bernie which I might still take up! :) This is because the amended .gpx version has quite a lot of info in just one of the GSAQK fields...such as:

Pillar FB S8132 NH 63533 54777 TP4964

Not all the TP's have this info - the NH part here is a ten figure OSGB grid ref. However the file also has Lat/Long coordinates which appear in their own separate fields in GSAK. If your .csv file has the ten figure grid in its own field, I can then choose to hide these columns to make the description less cluttered.

What would also be useful would be the bracket number and TP number in separate fields too? I could then put these into separate user data fields in GSAK. But perhaps this is just being pernickety - in any case I am very grateful.

That's why I meant when I said there wasn't much point loading the .gpx file because it only has the functionality of a .csv .The full GSAK database has Flush Bracket number, type of station, OSGB36 grid ref in different fields just as you suggest, plus access & condition notes where relevant.

Best PM me an email address & I'll send you the full thing.
