Clan Riffster Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Few if any would attend and it would be so roundly ridiculed that no one else would try it, end of problem. As I know the cachers in my area, (from hosting many events), I'm betting it would have a large turnout. Us Central Florida cachers tend to have a pretty good sense of humor. (Heck, they need a sense of humor to tolerate me...) Quote
+geodarts Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) Wouldn't it have been much more effective, easier and brought more attention to their cause if they could have posted a "Trail Building Day in YouGottaWork State Park" event? We had an officially recognized "Broom Out" caching event to remove invasive scotch broom from an open space area. Like citoing with plants. I tend to think a trail building event would be similarly allowed, but it might depend on the area. Since the open space agency has never officially recognized anything other than an earthcache (despite the many traditionals that have been placed on various lands), it was nice to have a "geocaching event" that contributed to the park and brought the game to people's attention in a positive way. Edited December 8, 2009 by Erickson Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 The trail building event wasn't a good example, since it likely would have been approved. I was just working with what was presented to me to make the point that had it been a listed event it would have drawn more volunteers to help with 'the cause'... whatever the cause might be. Quote
4wheelin_fool Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I think this birthday contest, and the prize money it gave away, represent a serious abuse of the police power of government. The real question is: Do you, as a taxpayer, need to be privy to how the Department of Defense conducts investigations? If the government creates an experiment to test how many social network groups are operating in the US, any of which could possibly grow large enough to topple the government in an effort to create mass chaos and the eventual takeover of the United States by a foreign entity causing the infrastructure of the free market system to collapse and to have the US run like a 3rd world country, does the taxpayer really need to be "socially aware" of the actual reason? Do you think it could be possible that the groups that participated in the event are being investigated to see if they could possibly have another agenda in place? You should rest easy that the victor used capitalism as a tool to win, rather than another "socialist" type of entity. If the government used another method to investigate, I'm certain it would have cost plenty more than $40K. Must the government always be viewed in a pessimistic way? Is there any type of government that can satisfy the wants of the public? or must it be constantly condemned, despite being one of the most sucessful? People who are not thankful for what they have already often lose the very things that they take for granted, making any situation much worse, rather than improving it... So last weekend's tax money giveaway, the one that only appeared to be an expensive birthday party favor, is really a cleverly-disguised scheme to root out Al Qaida – and I should learn to be more patriotic by shutting up and getting the hell out of the way? Interesting theory. I can’t wait to hear more. Please, do go on. I never mentioned Al Qaida. And I happen to dislike bogus taxpayer programs probably as much as you do. You have to carefully analyze each one. This program was funded by the Defense Department, they are not going to announce their ulterior motives and skew the results if there was another investigation going on. As of 2008 it had increased to 926. http://www.splcenter.org/intel/map/hate.jsp This past summer there was a riot on South Street in Phila that was organized through a social networking site. Arrest connected to rampage A man who allegedly attacked a 54-year-old while believed to be part of a large flash mob that terrorized South Street May 30 is the first — and so far only — arrest attached to the incident. Stephen Lyde, 21, was arrested 11:30 a.m. Friday at his home on the 5400 block of Sansom Street. He was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, theft and riot, Capt. Laurence Nodiff of the 1st Police District said at a press conference Friday. The man was walking along Broad and South streets on his way home from West Philadelphia at about 11:30 p.m. when eight men — of which Lyde is charged with being a part of — allegedly pummeled and robbed him of his wallet and credit cards and left him unconscious and bleeding in the street. With skull, face and rib fractures, the victim was transported to Hahnemann University Hospital and was on life support for several days, Nodiff said. Still in the hospital, the victim was listed in critical condition as of Monday. Also that Saturday night, about 30 to 300 teens believed to have been connecting and told to convene on South via a social networking site vandalized a convenience store on Broad and Christian streets, assaulted a man with his own cane, a couple in a Jeep and a police officer on the 900 block of South Broad as well as a cab driver. One member of the mob also took the taxi and hit several cars on the 600 block of South 12th Street. Police are still reviewing tapes and interviewing witnesses in the ongoing investigation, Nodiff said Quote

It also is an accurate reflection of my take away from your political/governmental posts. This part of your audience grew up enjoying the benefits of my country, aware from a fairly young age that tax dollars made much of it possible. Upon attaining the earliest possible age I joined the US Navy and took an oath to protect and defend my country that I will abide by to my dying day. American tax dollars made that Navy, and my paycheck, and my medical care ever since then, possible. I've had the luxury of visiting 18 countries (okay, some weren't so luxurious) and living in 3, and that has given me some perspective on why my tax dollars are well spent. So, when I hear someone constantly bitching about what's wrong with this country I get a bit rankled. Perfect, no, but by God it's the best on this planet! The statements that our government wastes some of our dollars is true, and a shame... but until you develop a breed of infallible super-humans who do no wrong and make no error that's going to happen. Am I biased and protective when I hear someone whose every thought is to criticize and attack my government? You bet your ash! Sign me, Biased Kool-aid Drinker Quote
+KBI Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 This part of your audience grew up enjoying the benefits of my country, aware from a fairly young age that tax dollars made much of it possible. Upon attaining the earliest possible age I joined the US Navy and took an oath to protect and defend my country that I will abide by to my dying day. American tax dollars made that Navy, and my paycheck, and my medical care ever since then, possible. And how much of that do you suppose would have been possible if the Defense Department had always been in the habit of giving away its budget in the form of birthday party prizes instead of spending it to recruit and train good folks like yourself? The statements that our government wastes some of our dollars is true, and a shame... but until you develop a breed of infallible super-humans who do no wrong and make no error that's going to happen. And when people like me stop raising objections when we observe that waste, as you seem to suggest I should do, what do you suppose will happen then? Is it wrong for a citizen like myself to hold his government accountable? Am I biased and protective when I hear someone whose every thought is to criticize and attack my government? You bet your ash! As well you should be. Your enthusiasm is praiseworthy ... and I share it. The real shame it that there is not more of it out there. Am I biased and protective when I see someone wasting your – and my – hard earned dollars on silly waste? Ditto. I hear nothing in your point of view that I disagree with ... only a simple breakdown in understanding. When I say this: "I think this $40,000 birthday party giveaway of our tax dollars is very irresponsible. Can anyone convince me otherwise?" Some of you seem to hear this: I HATE THE GOVERNMENT!! THE WHOLE GOVERNMENT!!! I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m sorry, but I don’t follow the reasoning that connects those two sentiments. Quote

You are right, I apologize for the rant. It is in fact every citizen's responsibility to hold our government accountable. I guess what set me off was my assumption that you have not written your Senator to complain about this, a much more effective and proper way to hold government in check than complaining in forums. Hopefully you did that too. As to the 'I hate Government' bit I probably am too sensitive and tend to read that into criticism... I was taught not to complain about something I wasn't willing to try to fix, so my first response to hearing criticism of government is to think "So go do something about it! Take a government job, or run for office!" That's probably not a very healthy way to look at things. Sorry if I miscast your patriotic zeal. Quote

I was taught not to complain about something I wasn't willing to try to fix, so my first response to hearing criticism of government is to think "So go do something about it! Take a government job, or run for office!" That's probably not a very healthy way to look at things. Sorry if I miscast your patriotic zeal. Don't over do it 'Bama, you had it right the first time. Hopefully you did that too. I probably should. I do so semi-regularly. Letters to elected officials, Letters to the Editor, etc. I might sent in an objection to this one as well. You are right. I feel strongly about this, and should probably send an email to my elected folks in Washington. I guess what set me off is the casual way others in here were ignoring what I see as a blatantly irresponsible givaway of your and my hard-earned tax dollars, and the way they even seemed to want to encourage it. I stated my opinion, and my opinion was followed by wild misrepresentations of my opinion. Quote

Here's the thing: Not only were you not a part of that decision making process, you don't even have the first guess as to why the decision was made. Clearly, it was to entice people to participate. To what end, we don't have a clue. I choose to believe that they decided that it was the better decision to use the cash as an enticement than it would be to complete the study in another way. You choose to believe that they merely decided to throw a bunch of money out the window. Similarly, the military produces expensive commercials, games, and other marketing gimmicks to entice people to join up. They could spend less money on recruitment, but these methods serve their purpose. Even though some of their efforts could be viewed as cash wasters, these same methods help them meet their goals and have been determined (by them) to be financially sound way to meet the need. Quote
+fatboy52 Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Okay... some good opinions... tough all in the same direction. What's about evolution, instead of unanimism? If you think we have a perfect game thats fine... I think everything can always be better. Thank you all very much for your feedback... its solely what I wanted... to measure the trends. what the heck unanimism?? Quote

It's been so long since I've seen anything but a micro in a tree I wouldn't know You say that like you don't want to see micros or something. But I know that can't be the case, because it's so easy to filter out micros and you'd never have to see another one. Ever. And since you're a premium member you can do it even easier with PQs. A quick look at your profile shows that you've only found 5 micros since you joined in October, so you must have already figured this out too. I guess you must be joking and stuff. Good one! HAHAHAHA! Quote

That's a good example. While I sympathise with the idea of having smaller government, I think that once you've decided to have a specific government agency, you have to accept that to function at all, it will need a proper budget, and that you can't go round micro-managing every aspect of it. You can lobby to abolish the military, or DARPA, or for DARPA to not conduct research into social networking, but to simply complain that of the $1 million (say) which DARPA spends as part of a research exercise, that $40,000 ends up in the pockets of the participants, seems to me rather trivial. Baysidebob Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 One year on the afternoon before Thanksgiving our dishwasher broke. Not problem purchasing a new appliance living in the land of Master Card. Problem was installation before the whole family arrived and I didn't want to do it. I told the wife we'd donate the money for the new dishwasher to the church and she'd be "Washin' dishes for the Lord." Not everyone has the same view of social responsibility. I had it installed before midnight. It's a good rule. Quote
