+Zor
When I originally signed up for Geocaching.Com, the username I wanted, Zor, was taken. However, I have gone by this online handle since back in the BBS days so I wanted to continue to use it for Geocaching. Like I used to do on IRC, I added ^ marks to either side of my name and I was able to register with my nick as ^Zor^. Tonite, purely out of curiosity, I looked up the user on Geocaching.Com who had the nick "Zor". Turns out this user signed up for an account in late October of 2006, and has never signed on ever again. Last visit says the same day he signed up. So my question is, since this user is no longer using the website, is there any way I can claim that nick? I'd like to drop the ^ from my name since I only used them since the original nick was taken. It really isn't a big deal but I thought I would ask. I am still new so I figured it couldn't hurt. Any useful feedback/info would be appreciated. Thanks. Link to comment

+Isonzo Karst
I believe the way to an answer on this question would be to use the general inquiries email, contact@geocaching.com. Names that have been registered but have no use at all can be reassigned, I think, but I don't know if there's a time that they wait, or exactly what the criteria are. Link to comment
+Shilo
You can try sending the person a private message and see if they respond back. If they no longer wish to use the login you can take your case to contact@geocaching.com maybe with some success. They should get your PM because the account should be linked to a e-mail address. If its valid or not is another thing. Link to comment
bogleman
I would hope that someone would send out an email and wait at least 2 weeks before taking it. I've got 2 unsenames that are dormant but not forgotten. No activity, no history, no reply - fair game Link to comment
+gof1
Have a look at this post.http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...p;#entry3032392 It seems to indicate that if a user account has been validated or used in any way that it is just plain no longer available. Ok, no idea what I did wrong but here it is copy and pasted. ------------------------------------------------------------------ How do I change my username? As many are aware, Jeremy posted this thread back in 2006 http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=130149 where he said: QUOTE For those who just can't live without changing their usernames we'll do our best to come up with some tools to move your information over to a new username. Well my friends, that time has come... Due to a recent feature change to our website, we now have the ability to grant username changes under qualifying circumstances. Approvals of username changes are at the discretion of Groundspeak, Inc. and need to comply with the Terms of Use listed here: http://www.geocaching.com/about/termsofuse.aspx. Please ensure the username is available before making the request via a search using this page: http://www.geocaching.com/email. If your search comes up empty, then the username is available. Note: It is not necessary to create an account using the intended username. We'll do that. If the username already exists and has ever been validated, or the username has been used in any way, then the username is not available. The request for a username change needs to be made from the email address in your account profile and sent to contact@Groundspeak.com. Provide the current username as well as the requested new username. Please make sure you specify the exact spelling, spacing and capitalization for your new username. ------------------------------------------------------------ From this thread. Post #35. +Jaz666
I asked the same question to contact@ a few years back. The response was, even if they've been inactive for 8 years, and their email is now invalid, their account won't be removed, just in case they wish to return to the game sometime in the future. Not the response I was hoping for, but I've just had to live with it In my case, 'JAZ' hasn't found a cache since May 2001, not logged in since Jan 2003 and is now an invalidated member - I guess if Groundspeak started to delete old unused accounts it could cause headaches on cache listings. +Shilo
You can contact the person and if they have no interest in coming back you can see if they will do this for you. How do I delete my account? Solution Although usernames are technically never permanently deleted, Groundspeak can certainly disable your account. You will first want to verify the email address that's registered to your account by checking your profile page. http://www.geocaching.com/my/details.aspx If that email is no longer current, you may need to update your profile accordingly and validate it to make sure you can receive emails from geocaching.com. Next, from the email address in your profile send Groundspeak a request to disable your username. To expedite the process, please make sure you reference the username in question in the body of the email. contact@geocaching.com Please note that if you have an active PayPal Subscription, you may need to contact PayPal to cancel it. Lastly, Groundspeak will respond back to your email to confirm your request has been completed. Link to comment
