+osos7 Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 I’ve had a few run-ins with rattlesnakes near caches. It got me thinking about wearing gloves. What are the best gloves for caching? Quote
+DavidMac Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 when dealing with snakes, it's not usually your hands that you should be worried about- unless you stick your hands into dark holes without checking them first . It's better to carry a stick to check with before reaching in. And watch your step, too... I carry a pair of leather garden gloves, for reaching into thorny places, and a few pair of nitrile exam gloves, which can be handy for caches in poison ivy or muddy places when you want to keep your hands clean. magellan315 Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Get a hiking stick and make sure to give the location a good poke before sticking your hands in. Quote
gonegeofishing Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 The ones that are on your caching partners hand. Quote
+Sioneva Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I picked up a $1.00 pair of gardening gloves that look hideously cute, all blue and yellow, but they're surprisingly tough - I can handle blue spruce without a problem, which, if you know how prickly that tree is, is quite an accomplishment! (How's that for a run-on sentence?) I guess my advice would be - don't assume you have to pay loads of money for good gloves. Unless you were talking winter gloves, in which case, I'm just babbling. Wait. I AM just babbling. Quote
+Ambrosia Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 It has never occured to me to wear gardening gloves when doing certain caches. But it would make such a difference to my allergies of certain evergreens like spruce and juniper. Great. I'm already having problems closing my geocaching backpack. Quote

I wouldn't trust any cheap gloves against snakes and then I wouldn't want to wear them all the time. As been mentioned, a good stick is better. As for caching gloves I like a good pair of work gloves made of pig or deer skin. These are usually a lot thinner than the $1 work gloves and fit a lot better, too. Quote

I vote for a stick or trekking pole. If you really want "puncture resistant" gloves, consider: Turtleskin Gloves Hex Armor A note of caution, these gloves are puncture resistant, not puncture proof. bogleman Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I like leather gloves, just be careful with the dye. If you sweat your hands may turn yellow - kind of hard to explain the funny stained hands when you go to shake someones hand and they pause..... Quote
