+jbiciolis91 Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 (edited) Hello everybody, I just became a member yesterday and I have a question about the GPS and website. If your gps comes with the pc connection cord can I directly load coordinates off of the website into my gps or would I have to put them in manually? Thanks Edited June 21, 2007 by PeoriaFFA_09 Quote
+gps_junky Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 YES!!!! You need to download GCSAK. in order to do it though. Look in the forums page for geocaching swiss army knife and download. There should be a des. on how this is done with it!!!!! Hope that helps. Quote
+Miragee Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 From a link on your "My Account" page, you can create Pocket Queries. Download and install GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) to your PC, and if you already have a PDA, Cachemate works very well. Quote
CooeyMB Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 If you have a garmin gps you can now download the coordinates directly to yuor machine using a browser plug-in. Note: you need to register an account at Garmin. From the website: Go GeocachingSearch thousands of geocaches* and load them directly to your Garmin device — no more entering coordinates manually! Garmin Plugin or learn more: Here's how it works: Specify the area where you want to search. Search for geocaches Select the geocaches you want and load them to your Garmin device connected to your computer. What is a geocache? A geocache is an object that someone has hidden at a certain, exact location (latitude & longitude). You can use your Garmin device to seek them out. More info about geocaching. Compatible Devices Most portable or handheld Garmin GPS devices, except for PDA’s. Compatible Browsers All major browsers are supported for geocache searching. However, downloading cache locations to your Garmin device requires installing the Garmin Plugin. Currently, the Garmin Plugin can only be installed in Internet Explorer and Firefox for Windows. Stay tuned for support for additional platforms in the future. Quote
+briansnat Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 GSAK is a great application, but for someone who is new to this it might be a bit much. Unless you are technically savvy, you might want to start with a free and simple application like EasyGPS to load caches to your unit. Once you've mastered that, then you can take a look at all the great features in GSAK and decide if you want to purchase it. Quote
+StarBrand Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 What type of unit do you have? Is it Serial or USB? If USB - make sure you load the USB drivers onto your system before using any other software to try and move data to the GPSr. Quote
+imajeep Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I'd echo the recommendation on Easy GPS. GSAK is a great application if you want to maintain a complete cache database offline. But some people prefer not to do that--for example, I use the online database exclusively, then download caches I want to hunt as a pocket query. I can load the waypoints for these caches into my GPSr using Easy GPS (I actually use Expert GPS, a paid upgrade to Easy GPS). Quote
+Miragee Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I agree that EasyGPS is very easy to use, but since the OP is from Glendale, AZ, an area that is very cache-rich, GSAK will ultimately be more practical because any single 500-cache PQ isn't going to cover a very large geographical area. Getting several PQs, either with different "center points" or using the date range, and then using GSAK's distance, or Arc Poly, filter, will provide a wider area to travel through for a caching adventure. So do I have to make pocket quiries before I use either one of these No, you can download them directly from he cache page (click on the dowload button), or the search results page (check the box to the right of the caches you want to dowload, then page toward the bottom and hit the download button).
