+Waldo_Mudd
I'm flying through LAX tomorrow and my layover is 11 1/2 hours long. I want to grab some caches while I'm there, but the taxi fare is a pain. I did this in Hawaii last month and $20 was a pricey cab ride. (I caught the bus back.) If we could have somewhere to get in touch with people in the area to escort us to their favorite caches or just to caches right near the airport it would be awesome. Is there anywhere to do this, or is this a bad idea with the crazies that might be lurking. Thanks for your responses. Waldo_Mudd Quote Link to comment
+TheAlabamaRambler
You can start by getting yourself added to our national phone-a-friend list. We are geocachers who are willing to be called by others for phone-a-friend hints and geocaching-related issues. You can only receive the list by being willing to put yourself on it and committing to helping callers. Contact Ron at okc_nightcrawler@sbcglobal.net to be added to the list. My contact info is widely published, so anytime you want to cache Alabama, especially from Montgomery north, feel free to call. In fact anyone coming to Alabama can post to our forum, dixiecachers.com, and find information and willing hosts! I am retired and available from 6 a.m. to midnight CST, and frequently host traveling cachers. If you, or anyone reading this, ever get to Alabama give me a call. The Birmingham airport is 3 miles away and there are 500 caches of every possible description within 15 miles of it! Ed 205-914-6814 Quote Link to comment

+tsunrisebey
I don't know what in the heck I just did to get that posted but guess I better pay more attention to what I am doing.............lol. Thanks for posting that, had no idea that was something people did. I'm going to be in Atlanta over-night on a trip back from Belize come middle of May. That list may come in handy. I will be sure to add my name, not that many people fly into Helena, Montana but it helps to have a 4x4 to get around to some of the mountain caches. Quote Link to comment

Waldo_Mudd I remember during a similar layover at LAX in 2000 that it was pretty cheap to rent a car there. I think we rented one for about $35 or $40 and pretty much drove around the whole basin (and some mountains to the north!). Too bad caching was just starting then (and we would remain in "muggle-land" for another 5 years) Now wasting time in L.A. traffic, that's another thing altogether (though we were lucky that day) Quote Link to comment
+D@nim@l
I will find myself in the exact same senario next week anwith 11hr layover in LAX. Plenty of time to pick up a cache or 6 and a rental car for the day can be had for under $30 and you can go where you want. D Quote Link to comment

Depending upon region of the USA, renting an economy rental car for a day will cost between $18 and $30 per day. Easy to arrange in advance; pick up car and go spend 6 or 10 hours caching, grab a meal, see some sights and then return it... Quote Link to comment

Anyone can rent a car and wander around - and that can be fun. If you want to meet people, maximize the time available, discover the good restraunts, see the best caches, you'll arrange to hook up with someone! Maybe it's a Southern thing... Could be why good old Southern hospitality is appreciated world-wide! Quote Link to comment

Could be why good old Southern hospitality is appreciated world-wide! I'm all for the Southern way then! I have enough trouble trying to navigate from my little Garmin, and drive at the same time in a city I'm moderately familiar with, it'd be an utter nightmare in a city I don't know at all! Hooking up with a friendly local cacher would be the best possible thing I could think of. If I'm ever down in that area... Meanwhile, if anyone finds themselves stranded in Omaha, NE, give me a shout. Quote Link to comment
+welch
If you can figure out which filters to turn off/on, you might try seeing if anyone is listed on the Geocaching TourGuide Waymark Quote Link to comment
+TheAlabamaRambler
Thanks! Didn't know the waymark existed! I submitted WM16HD. Quote Link to comment
+Waldo_Mudd
Well thanks for the ideas. I rented a car for $40 and I will hit every single cache I can. If anyone wants to join me or can be a better guide it would be greatly appreciated. I should arrive at 1240 local time and be caching until the sun goes down. If anyone has a recommendation for a great cache to visit, let me know the waypoint and I will be sure to grab it. Thanks all and happy caching. Waldo_Mudd Quote Link to comment
