First thing you need to do is go to all 18 greens and mark them as named waypoints. Now what are you going to mark? The front of the green? The center of the green. The back of the green? And take into account that the pin placement will constantly change and you need to compensate. The default units setting on your GPS is Statute Miles. You are going to want to go to the Setup menu and then the Units menu and change the Distance/Speed setting to Yards. Very convenient for you they offer Yards as a choice instead of Feet. +Woodbutcher68
Some of the courses in the Chicago area have GPS units on the carts, that do it for you. I'll take up golf when I can't hold a GPSr any more! Quote Link to comment
+Nellamit
There is actually at least one company marketing a golf-specific gps unit. It has maps of many golf courses loaded in so it tells you your exact yardage from any point on the course. I've seen them advertised on the golf channel. Quote Link to comment
+Rockin Roddy
Many leagues have rules about the use of GPS units to check distances from the green, the rule that has allowed the use of the units isn't a blanket permit for all. Our league did not allow them, some do. Check with your league (if you are in one) and find out what the rules are. The great thing about a GPS unit is that you can always tell exactly how far you are from the point on the green you marked. The units many courses use also have land features such as bunkers and ponds/lakes or streams/rivers, they show the out of bounds areas and woods etc... There are applications available to add a golf course to your unit, but I can't remember where my friend got his from...he uses a GPS/PDA that keeps track of every shot, his average for each hole, his distance he hit and which club etc...this can be very useful. +JDandDD
Intelligolf Eagle edition for the Palm uses the GPS to give you course information. You can download curses from their course database (a real course that someone has surveyed) or use the software to survey the course as you go. Us the length of the hole, the starting coords from the GPS, the program will keep track of how far you hit the ball and how far you have to go to the green. Lots of other features to track club usage (length, accuracy), sand saves, putting, etc. JD Quote Link to comment

+Billk72
Who cares what the distances are let me know when a ball will tell me where it is so I don't spend forever trying to find it. Quote Link to comment
