Cache Contents

I am relatively new to this sport, but I have noticed something in the few finds that I have made. The contents of the caches are nowhere near the worth of the original cache. It looks as though the rule of swapping for things of equal value is being ignored by lots of folks. Now, I'm not in this to gain anything so normally I don't take anything other than travel bugs. In the beginning I would read the contents of the cache I was going for and take things along of equal value only to find nothing but junk to trade. SO I stopped taking anything and only leaving things like batteries or insect repellant wipes (Things that a normal hiker/camper might use or appreciate). One of the caches that I was going to find had a CC silver dollar in it originally but in the visit logs it showed that someone had taken the coin and left a rubber ball and a plastic army man......... I would have liked to have seen the silver dollar but I would not have taken it because of the value, but it could have been enjoyed by many people. And now my question... Is this the reason for having members only caches? So that it is more likely that the rule will be followed? I have some things that I am sure lots of people would enjoy seeing but I would hate to think that if I put something out there in the general pubic that it would be replaced by a McDonalds trinket........ I know there is risk of losing nice things but wouldn't it be fun if everyone followed the rules?

Its just a fact that you have to live with. If even only 1 out of 10 finders makes a cheesy trade, by time the cache has 50-60 finds its full of junk.

Making it members only might slow the degradation, but won't stop it. Just because someone is a subscriber doesn't mean they are honest traders.

Just the name of the game. More people are going to trade for something better.

I think the only thing I've taken is a geocaching sticker. I try to keep my eye out for things that I could just leave.

I'm here for the advanture though. If it was just a log in the box the thrill would be the same for me.

This brings about a question I have. I have two cache containers made and waiting until this weekend to go find a suitable place to stash them. With these two containers that I am starting out with, I am making them in hopes of catering toward kids. I am still searching my worn out brain for a catchy title to name these caches so that they will be directed more towards the kids.

To start the caches, I have placed about 10 toy, game, kid type fun trinkets into each.

Now brings my question. I anticipate that probably more adults will migrate to these just to log more finds than kids will, and I also anticipate that most of the little things will be scarfed up by the adults who locate these. Is it OK to randomly check on these cache sites and just add some more of the same kid trinkets as they dwindle down, or, are these to be left alone and only accumulate what is hopefully traded for ? (based on trade items being safe for kids).

Of course its OK to re-seed your caches. Many caches owners consider it to be part of maintenance.

We have a cache that is "themed" to contain ONLY dog friendly things. It is stated RIGHT ON THE PAGE that if you are going to take something...please leave a dog item. Almost ALL of the logs on it say "sorry didn't have a dog toy or anything...but we took X Y or Z...and will return later to put something in." Guess what??? They NEVER come back! I have a feeling we aren't going to be keeping this cache around too much longer.
