2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
We have a benchmark found for the contest that has the letters "U S C S" on it. This is an old benchmark (pre-disk era). We know who the USGS is, the CGS, etc, but do not recognize these initials. Is this the fore-runner of the CGS? Any clarification would be appreciated. John Quote Link to comment
+Klemmer
United States Coast Survey. Have seen a couple of theirs out here on the west coast (or at least read the datasheets....): U.S.C.S. Looks like they are now the Office of Coast Survey in NOAA. They are the folks who make the Nautical Charts. I've used a few. Edited April 30, 2006 by Klemmer & TeddyBearMama Quote Link to comment
+Ernmark
..I just found a link on google that mentions the "US Coast Survey" through the Arlington Cemetery of all places: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/uscgs.htm ..looks like that was the name between 1836 - 1878. I also saw a link toKU2642 on GC.. - E Quote Link to comment

Here is the 1st 2 official log headers for that mark.... 1/1/1966 by CGS (MONUMENTED) 1/1/1875 by CGS (SEE DESCRIPTION) It reads as though it was monumented in 1966 & recovered 91 years earlier in 1875! Thanks for the link about USCS and somebody has found an 1878 benchmark. Thanks Klemmer for pointing me in the right direction. Papa-Bear-NYC
The "United States Coast Survey" was an earlier name of the familiar "United States Coast and Geodetic Survey". Originally their mandate was just the coast lines. When their name was changed and "and Geodetic" was added, their mandate was enlarged to include the interior of the country. This is in the history of the agency which (I believe) is on the NGS site. Quote Link to comment

+GEO*Trailblazer 1
I had written some of that history here: 2007 CGS HISTORY (NOW NOAA-NGS) I brought this up a while back being 2007 is the 200th Anniversary. The benchmarkcoin club has things in the works for this. It goes along with the other Things that will soon be out. I been busy at it and hope you all like it. Quote Link to comment
