+phoneman66 Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I received my Garmin Legend today, and I have a question. I recall reading somewhere that Gps units function better while laying flat. Is that true, or can I stuff it in my pocket? Quote
+Airmapper Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I believe you have a patch antenna, which means it likes to be held more toward flat. You can try it in your pocket, but it will probably drastically impede the signal. Quote
+El Diablo Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 It does have a patch antenna. You need to have it as unobscured as possible. El Diablo Quote

However, I get great reception when my eTrex Vista is in the auto mount, or clipped to a strap on my backpack, both of which put it in the upright position. Bottom line - there's a difference, but not a big difference. Quote

Looks like you could put this on your hat and put the GPS in your pocket. Carl Quote

Same here....not a huge difference as I'm hiking to the cache, but when I get a couple hundred feet from the cache area, I put it flat to improve the signal. Quote
Nediam Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I have a CompactFlash card GPSr fitted to my PDA. It works best with it laying almost flat. However, it usually works upright, upside down, back to front etc, I've even managed to keep a signal lock with it in my fleece pocket or rucksack. The main problem with keeping a signal lock will be trees, terrain (e.g. canyons, gorges, etc.) and tall buildings. Quote
+Adrenalynn Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 And body-shielding in your pocket. It's near-microwave(shf, 1.2+ghz). Which is heavily impeded by the water in your body parts. Quote
+gluteusmaximus92 Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 I have a vista cx, and it does get a better signal at a 45 dgree angle. However, on my belt clip (which holds it vertically) it'll hold a signal just fien. Quote
+wandererrob Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 My old Vista did ok in my pocket and whatnot. I usually tended to keep it in my pocket until I got close then held it flat, in hand as I approached the cache. Quote
