Ever Done It This Way? (with A Compass)

Recommended Posts

Did you ever drive to the parking spot, then use your GPS to get a bearing and distance to the cache site, leave the gps in the car or your pocket and try to find the cache using your trusty compass? I´ve done it one time when the cache was only a couple hundred feet away across an open field. I´d like to try it over longer distances and through heavier cover, like woods. Has anyone ever tried this? And if so, how did you like it? Anything unexpected/surprising happen?

On a puzzle cache that (ironically, it turns out) presented a map-and-compass problem, I miscalculated the result at home. When I arrived at the cache site I realized my mistake and used my compass to apply the correction. This turned out to be a lot quicker than inputting the data to 'project a waypoint' from the erroneous position.
