What Should Be Outlawed From A Cache?????

Recommended Posts

What I'm bothered by is someone's need to tell me what is offensive and shouldn't be in the cache just because they don't want to be preached to or they believe dirty golf balls and little itty bitty marbles are trash.

I don't think anyone has a need to tell you these things. Why do you? This thread wasn't started, near as I can tell, as a "Tell TotemLake What's Offensive" thread. I took it as a "gripe about the things you hate to find in caches thread". Admittedly, the thread title uses strong language "outlawed" and "banned" but does anyone honestly think this thread is going to be turned into a set of laws? That will be enforced?

So let's go back to the OP:

The best you can do is make a list of items that you should never find in a cache.

Personally I think you're reading a little too much into it, and this epithet "cache cop" that you keep tossing about is a clear indicator of that.

Yah that came about because this person stated:

QUOTE (the 4 Chalupa's @ Jun 22 2005, 04:49 PM)

QUOTE (eaglespirit0 @ Jun 22 2005, 06:42 PM)

>> Do You Have a Spot in Heaven? with a little checklist of things to do to get into heaven.<<

If I did, I sure as hell wouldn't by the time I was done burning the trash in the cache and replacing it with stuff people WANT to find.

Try to keep up with me here because that's when I said...

One man's trash is another's treasure. What gives you the right to decide which is which? You might disagree with the pamphlet or the checklist, but it just might strike a chord with somebody else. As long as the contents and cache are in good shape, you are not my cache cop. Leave the contents alone if you don't feel like trading them.

I did not specifically call anybody a cache cop. Point it out and I'll retract it.

I assume you are not referring to items which are clearly forbidden (such as food, alcohol, firearms, tobacco) etc.

What about, say, pornography?  Are you telling me that since it isn't on the forbidden list, and I crack open a cache frequented by families with small children to find it contains porn, I *shouldn't* remove it?

Eh? You forgot my previous statement to keep what you quoted in context:

Aside from truly socially offensive items and common sense , I could care less what you think sucks and doesn't suck, what is lame and not lame.

To be blunt, if I traded that stuff out with items of equal value in my estimation, it's really none of your business what my motivations were.  If I open a cache and find a satanic bible in it, I'm going to trade for it and remove it.  My reasons for doing this might be because I'm a satanist and I want the thing, or it might be because I'm a christian and I don't want a kid to find the thing, or it might be because I believe caches shouldn't contain religious items out of respect for the diverse theologies of geocachers.  In any of these cases, as long as I traded for it, I'm not overstepping anything.  Even if I then contact the person who put it there and say "what the heck were you thinking?"

Good for you. That means you followed the intent and spirit of the game. You came, you found it, you swapped items, you signed the log, and you put the cache back. Where did we differ in this? No where in this thread or others did I ever complain about that process.

I think with exception to some out of context examples, you and I are in agreement.

I have Grrrr for your angst. You're making baby jesus cry :laughing::laughing:

Totem, the only problem I have is with bullies like you who try to intimidate others and think they are superior to others as you so clearly do.

YES I called you a name. This should make you jump for joy---run with it.

Now you can think on it awhile, and dissect my sentences ignoring what doesn't help your antagonistic agenda and respond to try and make yourself look intelligent, well spoken and level headed.

A discussion was being had, you picked and picked until you started the fight you originally intended to do. Then with what seems like glee you started the little holier than thou dance, baiting others until you got what you wanted so you could put your spin on it all.

You are not better than everyone, you are not smarter than everyone.... live and let live, discuss and let discuss.

I have a gift for you.........THE LAST WORD...... take it and enjoy.

This is in response to the above quote, as well as a couple of others in this thread as well:

I have read every bit of this discussion, and I see nowhere where TL was being a bully. He has clearly stated his opinion, and done it fairly well, in my opinion. He hasn't been rude, overbearing, and he certainly hasn't been casting such a negative light on others, as you seem so free to do.

I guess this thread could be worse than it is, but let's not make even worse, please? Give TL a break. He's a nice guy, and has a right to say these things. It does not in any way make him "trying" to look intelligent. If he looks intelligent, than maybe it's because he is.

But then again, I don't claim to have a lunatic stuck in my head (as per your avatar caption), so perhaps that's the difference in our gc teams and our perceptions.

You couldn't resist to keep it from putting in a personal jab eh? Otherwise, even though I still disagree, your difference of opinion is duly noted as you stated it instead of sticking with your original comment.

I want to mention The 4 Chalupas was very big to go in and edit there "jab" to add smileys for the light it was intended to be in. No harm no foul in my book.

While I'm at it, a warm thanks to Ambrosia for that warm fuzzy.

And TJ&B... I'm sorry you feel that way.

Cheers all!

After reading some of these posts, I have to admit, I wouldn't have thought a thing about it if I had seen a bumper sticker backing my political views, not thinking about how I would like to see bumper stickers not reflecting my political views (all in baggies of course  ). Glad I will now be aware of leaving something like that, I guess it's the same with the religious literature.

Religious notes and poems. If you're not Christian, they're offensive.

Ummm, speak for yourself about what's offensive.

I'm Agnostic and whatever floats someone's boat is OK with me.

I agree that the stuff doesn't really belong in a cache, but I can find muuuuch better things to be offended about.

I think that, exept for extreme hides, this is a family oriented game and should be treated that way. To me TB's are the most (or should be) valuable items in caches because the owners are tracking them. So there shouldn't be anything nasty in there if a child looks into the cache container. We know that politics and religion always stir strong reactions so it maybe best to refrain from that. Though I have retreived Christian CD's and a book from different ones. I took them 'cause I like them. Last point: Remember this is a game!

Okay.... Am I missing something ?

I thought they idea was the HUNT not the Treasure !

If you want to retire with what you find in a cache, then I suggest you get a boat, head for Florida and search for treasure ships !

I could care less what is in the cache. I have saved everything, I even removed. I have it all on a shelf in my living room. Yes, nails, McToys, erasers, all kinds of junk. But every one was an adventure !

If you want to put Kugerrands in, okay...but, I'm not looking to get rich geocaching !

I have more fun finding the treasure chest, than the treasure.

Just my .02 ( no, my McToy instead of .02cents!)
