puzzle coordinates
One of the Texas Vikings replied to Sirrus123's topic in General geocaching topics
Remember, that the false coordinates, must be within 2 miles of the real coordinates. I usually pick one on the lake. Recently, I used my mapping program and when I converted the coordinates, I screwed up and my false coordinates were about 8 miles from the real ones. After the page was published and a few people advised me of what they thought was an error, I had to have the Prime Reviewer change to new coordinates that were within the 2 mile limit... -
bushwhacking stick
One of the Texas Vikings replied to Sirrus123's topic in General geocaching topics
Oh, but it is okay to steal sticks from beaver dams ! Yes, I can see that, after all, there are many more beavers and beaver dams, than there are bushes and leaves... -
To hint or not to hint - a controversy
One of the Texas Vikings replied to private bones's topic in General geocaching topics
Recently, 5 of us worked on supposedly a very difficult cache, only found a few times in 2 years; it is just a pic. We ended up being stumped after about 2 weeks working on. The owner doesn't reply to emails or answer questions. He refuses. Well, I just put it on my ignore list. Yes, it is tough, but anyone can make an impossible cache or maybe an "out in left field" cache. I put out a multi last week, with 10 pictures taken in the area with 10 dog tags, each with a number, giving you the final answer. "X doesn't Mark the Spot 2" The pics were Infrared and then purposly trashed to make them harder. On our local forum, I read where people were having troubles, with a couple of them. I listed my email for those who didn't know it and when they asked, I gave them subtle hints that would help them find that particular site. Not the answer, just a little help.... The reason I mention this is I have been on both sides recently. I know I could care less about the one I couldn't solve. I don't care if it is ever found again. And if anyone asks me, I will tell them that. But, when I gave some minor help on my cache, I got a really nice email from the cachers and a really nice log page. It made me feel really good about all the work I put into it. I want people to find my caches. I think it makes me a better "hider", because I solicit comments, good or bad. So the next cache will be better. I don't have to feel superior, because I put out a cache no one can find. I just try and make it difficult, but not impossible. Just my 2cents... GPS Usage on Passenger Airplane
One of the Texas Vikings replied to uminski's topic in General geocaching topics
Maybe because it is their plane, ya' think ? I agree, sometimes, it doesn't make sense, but, again, it's their plane.... When you are driving, would you let me smoke in your car ? Your car, your rules. Their plane, their rules. Don't like their rules, then drive ! or fly someone else's airplane. -
Pictures - Cool Cache Containers (CCC's)
One of the Texas Vikings replied to AmishHacker's topic in General geocaching topics
Tex, my silicon camo technique fails miserably with plastic, and I've been searching for an alternative. Do you use the Fusion paint for plastic? And presanding needed? What kind of adhesive do you use to attach the burlap? Thanx Brother! -Sean- I use, Fusion paint and I don't sand. The Burlap is put on with a glue gun, high temp. I have had a plastic pickle jar (gallon) out for about 2 years and altho the burlap is getting a little faded, it is still good enough to keep it hidden. I guess I just lucked out with the right combination, of glue, paint and camo burlap. I also have done ammo boxes and the glue holds up there, two. And, I always, put 1/16" aircraft cable or light chain on the cache and secure to a tree or stump. That way, the muggles can't walk off with it. Sorry it took so long to answer, but I just saw the question.... Rick (One of the Texas Vikings) -

I have a Vista, which I bought for Powered Paragliding, so the altimeter and compass were needed. I can't do that anymore, I still use the Vista, but since, everything within a 100 miles of me, is sea level, the altimeter is not a whole lot of use to me. The compass saved me one day, when I got lost in the woods. I now carry and extra compass just to make sure.

Are We In Exalted Company ?
One of the Texas Vikings replied to dunderhead's topic in General geocaching topics
My 35 times removed grandfather was Ingolfur Arnason, a Viking and the founder of Iceland. Does that count ??? And I am "One of the Texas Vikings" -
I use a fishing vest, put my Camel Bak in the back pocket keeps me cool. All kinds of room for things. Plus it distributes the weight. Hang my Pocket Pc in it's Otter Case from it and My Garmin Vista around neck. Grab my hiking staff with the pepper spray fasten to it. I have run into feral dogs a couple of times. I would rather spray them, than hit them on the head. I wonder why the kids call me "Indy" ?

I made a small sign, which I keep on the sunvisor, when it isn't being used. I throw it on my dashboard. It has our logo, GC's Logo, some graphics of GPSr, etc. and it says: "This Car is not abandoned. The owners are nearby geocaching. If they are needed, please blow your horn twice." "The Texas Vikings" Then it has GC's web address. Everytime I get out of the car, geocaching, I throw it on the dashboard. Other than that, as a former policeofficer, I can tell you... "Just do everything the nice policeman tells you to do." Be truthful, you have nothing to hide (except the cache back in place) Rick

Caches involving data and executables
One of the Texas Vikings replied to fizzymagic's topic in General geocaching topics
Is this why the script was stopped on my pages, that I built. I used a script to stop right clicking and highlighting and saving the text. Suddenly it doesn't work anymore. Nor does the wav file playing in the background. These are both handled by the browser and don't require anything to be downloaded, so what is the problem ? -

Late Logging
One of the Texas Vikings replied to Lemon Fresh Dog's topic in General geocaching topics
My intention is to write the log as soon as I experience the cache -- and then POST the log after 3-6 months. Reason: I leave things like coins in caches. This prevents me being "followed". Also, I don't want folks to have accurate stats on my caching. Whoa ! Just because you are paranoid, does not necessarily mean that someone is not out to get you! -

I stuggle with Puzzles
One of the Texas Vikings replied to bilbad's topic in General geocaching topics
I take it that you are looking for ideas. I enjoy making puzzles caches. Here is several I have done, using different ideas. Oil ! Movie Mania "Oldies but Goodies" The Truth is out there X doesn't Mark the Spot Geography Thorolfur's Treasure I agree, try to use something that gives no one a particular advantage, like advanced math puzzles. Watch using terms that are just for your type of industry. I ran into one, that I was working on, one time and the owner had used several acronyms that only someone in that industry would be familiar with. It was very frustrating. For example, I live in Houston and I am surrounded by Oil and gas workers, but I am not in that industry, so using terms familiar to them (like GOM) means nothing to me. Oh, GOM is Gulf of Mexico ! Also, something that requires them to do some homework before they go out. It is also fun to include pictures (you can't Google a picture..hahahaha) Before TPTB stopped it, I had my "Oldies but Goodies" page, so you couldn't right click on it. But, now, TPTB have stopped scripts from running on the cache pages. Now cachers can hi-lite the words and Google them. That makes it too easy.... Hope this helps... -
Back in Jan. of 2005, I placed a cache down by the San Jacinto river, just north of Houston, Texas, called Thorolfur's HitchHikers I put 8 Playmobil Vikings in it with the mission of getting to Iceland (the land of my grandfather). Last week, the first one made ! just a little over 2 years from Humble, Texas to the Althing outside of Reykjavik,Iceland ! ..... Rick, a proud member of the Texas Vikings

There are 8 "Texas Vikings". I am "One of the Texas Vikings". One daughter and son in law are "Two of the Texas Vikings" and another daughter is "Two Other Texas Vikings". We also have "MIL (mother in law) of Texas Vikings". I guess you see the point. We get a group together and pack a lunch and cache together. Taking Kids and dogs and grandkids. We cache together but at other times, alone. We all have seperate logins, so we can claim a find, or if we cache alone. Because sometimes you may want to cache alone or can't get a whole group together.

Airborne tubes for micros?
One of the Texas Vikings replied to wandererrob's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm trying to decide if you're serious, or being funny. I mean, it's just a cold remedy. Yes, that is what people say about all kinds of "over the counter" drugs, such as painkillers, allergy remedies, etc. Speaking as a former psychotherapist, many studies have shown that EVERYONE who later became an alcoholic or abuser of other drugs (i.e., pot, heroin, cocaine, etc.) first started with "innocent" over-the-counter drugs and then progressed, in a stepwise domino effect, to abusing alcohol, cocaine, pot or heroin. Statistics show that 95% of all heroin users ate or have eaten French Fries....therefore.... If you eat or have eaten French Fries, you have a proclivity to heroin use....! What a load !!!! Especially the part about "EVERYONE".... Typical Psychobabel.... Sorry, but it is....... -

Airborne tubes for micros?
One of the Texas Vikings replied to wandererrob's topic in General geocaching topics
It's a cold remedy/prevention tablet. You drop it in water, like an Alka Seltzer. Below was the best pic I could quickly find that shows the container in question. Whew !.... I'm glad you posted that. I was thinking of Airborne Package service and was wondering what kind of tubes they would have, that weren't cardboard.
