+briansnat
Every brand's base maps are pretty poor. Get maps. It will make your unit far more useful. Either Topo or Metroguide depending on your preference. If you're mostly going to be using your unit in the woods for geocaching and hiking, etc..., get Topo. If you want it for finding your way around town and urban and suburban caches, get Metroguide. Quote Link to comment

Every GPS manufacturer that I'm aware of requires that you use their proprietary maps. Yes, you can select the areas you want to dowload. Below is a picture of Mapsource Topo for your area. You see the map is divided into blocks of various sizes. You select the "blocks" that you want until you've reached the capacity of your GPS. The pink blocks show the selected area that will be loaded to your GPS, but but you will still have the base maps for all areas outside the covered area. I selected 8 megs worth of blocks because that is what your Legend will hold. Of course the area you choose to cover could be different. The maps are reusable. If you are traveling to another area, you can load the maps for that area into your GPS. It will delete your current maps, so when you return you will have to load your local maps back in. +GrnXnham
I prefer to use "Roads and Recreation" software on my Legend. The Legend only has 8MB of memory and no auto routing and R&R takes up less memory than Metroguide or City Select. It is however older and less accurate but by comparison I can only get about three counties on the Legend using City Select but I can get 1/2 the state of WA on the Legend using R&R. R&R is also more accurate than City Select on the back roads like Forest Service roads but worse in the city. Quote Link to comment
