Waypoint Grouping?

Is there a way to create waypoint groups? This would be to hide/display geocache waypoints. I was hoping to be able to choose to display geocaches only when I am geocaching.

 

BTW, I own an Etrex Legend.

I would also like to be able to do that on my Legend, but there does not seem to be any way of doing it on the Legend.

 

You would be able to do it with the Meridians that use memory cards.

 

You would just save your waypoints to the card in groups and load what ever group you wanted to use into the gps.

 

The only way I could think of doing it what a Legend is to bring a laptop with you.

 

Maybe a Legend/Palm combo would work to.

 

It sure would be a lot of extra stuff to cary around.

Grouping waypoints in any Etrex can be done by forcing the first letter of the waypoint code into various parts of the alphabet by the grouping you want. So all you need to do is force the first letter of the waypoint to be a different letter for a different group. For example, if you are using the GCxxxx code, then replace the G with an A and you now have ACxxxx codes that are all together on the Waypoint listing (under A).

 

The best way to manage this, as well as to accompolish much more extensive waypoint code manipulations, is with GSAK.

I've noticed that the descriptions of the new explorist units from Magellan say that they will have a Windows type of file system for managing coordinates. It remains to be seen exactly how this will work and whether it will address your question.I realize this doesn't help you with your etrex, but it may be a thought to store away for future use.

This can be done with the Magellan Meridians and it looks like the new Explorist 400, 500, abd 600 will have the same function. I use this function on my Meridian Gold. You can have them stored in groups by cache type, city location, Difficulty or however you want to.
