Are coordinates just the starting point?

We are new to geocaching and using a gps. We printed out a cache page description and the map. We found the park based on the map, but were confused about how to use the waypoint and the coordinates listed. The coordinates seemed to be the entry to the park. We thought the coordinates would take us to the actual hiding place of the cache. Are the large coordinates listed on each cache always just the starting point for the search?

The cache page should make it abundantly clear when/if the cache isn't at the posted coordinates. If they're posting the parking or entrance coordinates, the description should tell you what to do next. It's probably best to start out with a more straightforward cache, though. Unless the cache is listed as a multicache (or possibly a mystery cache type), the main coordinates are for the cache itself, and any parking or trailhead coordinates the owners care to provide would be given later and clearly labeled as such.

I have and on occasion. punched in wrong coordinates. It does not take much to be a thousand feet off. and make sure you are on WGS-84 datum, not something else that could easily be 5-hundred feet.Nad 27 will be off that much easy. check your settings. Or look right where it says. sometimes it is right there!
