+fastmonstr
Since Garmin's Roads and Recreation US has been discontiinued and is no longer for sale, would it be acceptable to leave a copy in a cache? I own the software and have made several back up copies. Quote Link to comment
+dhenninger
I would think that it would still be a violation of copyright laws. Quote Link to comment
+mtn-man
The original discs -- yes. The copies -- no. Quote Link to comment
+Mopar
Call 1-800-800-1020 and ask them yourself. Quote Link to comment
+Lemon Fresh Dog
I would send them an e-mail to Customer Service explaining what/why you want to do this. If you are lucky enough to get a yes (which I seriously doubt) -- KEEP the e-mail and consider a copy for the cache finder. A hassle? yes. Covering your rear-end? yes. Quote Link to comment

I like this better then calling. I would probably want it in writing (snail mail, not email) too. Quote Link to comment
+mtn-man
If you call them and tell them you have copies you are admitting you broke the law. Who know. They may be OK with it. Frankly, you should trash any copies you made most likely. Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
If you call them and tell them you have copies you are admitting you broke the law. There is NOTHING illegal with making archive copies for yourself. Selling or giving them to others is illegal. Quote Link to comment
+mtn-man
True, if you keep the original too. I'm thinking that if you make a copy and give the originals away that means that they lost a potential sale. I'm no copyright lawyer so I'm not sure though. Quote Link to comment

Good point...don't sell/give away your originals while you are still using a copy. Edited January 6, 2005 by Stunod Quote Link to comment
+Naturesprite
While I confess that I haven't researched it, it is likely that the software is being discontinued in favor of a new product. I'm sure garmin wants us to purchase the new product and would discourage distribution of old software since it would still dent their bottom line. Just a guess at why it probably isn't a great idea. Of Course, others have suggested asking Garmin...the best way to find out! Quote Link to comment
