+Thot
I had to use some solvent to remove Sharpie markings from one of my new dog tags. It removed the clear coating on the tag. Does this mean it will rust now? Quote Link to comment
+ZackJones
I doubt it. If you're concerned you can always get a can of clear spray paint and give it a coating. Zack Quote Link to comment
+Thot
I thought about that and decided a can of clear spray paint would cost almost as much as another dog tag. Quote Link to comment

Funny you say that. A few minutes after my last post that dawned on me. That's a good solution. My wife has clear fingernail polish. I've used it on a number of things over the years to retard rust. For some reason it doesn't seal perfectly. For example, if you paint a zinc plated bolt and leave it out in the weather it will begin to have lines of rust under the coating for some reason. But, it's a lot better than nothing. Quote Link to comment

+fly46
I agree with the rubbing alcohol thing. It gets sharpie off. Not sure if it will take the coating off, too, though. Quote Link to comment

+Thot
Aluminium oxidises, that is what Iron does, which produces rust. Yup, whitish aluminum oxide forms on the surface like red iron oxide (rust) forms on the surface of iron. One difference is rust does not create a protective layer preventing further oxidation – aluminum oxide does. So, aluminum has some natural resistance to oxidation created by the thin layer of oxide that forms naturally after its exposure to air. Most aluminum products you see are anodized to provide a good protective layer. Anodizing is a process of creating a thick uniform layer of aluminum oxide. Quote Link to comment
