dampeoples Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 I found this today, and went ahead and logged it. What's the proper procedure for something like this? I wasn't going to scale the fence, so I did what I could... Thanks, Quote

I wasn't going to scale the fence, so I did what I could... From the description, THE STATION IS THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF A 160 FOOT TALL MAST so no need to climb fence. Only needed to observe that the mast was still standing. Log it as a FIND. Quote
dampeoples Posted May 30, 2004 Author Posted May 30, 2004 Ah cool, thanks! New to the benchmark finding, I could have logged this from the road! Quote
+GEO*Trailblazer 1 Posted May 30, 2004 Posted May 30, 2004 I wonder what benchmark that is in the Photo? Did you do a search for others in the same area? Permission is usually aquired rather easily, when you explain your objective to the landowners. Happy Hunting. Your hooked now. Quote
Z15 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Judging from the size and shape I would think it to be USGS and not published by NGS because they only observed the light on the tower and not the bench mark, which btw may be dated later than the C&GS Survey. Quote
+GEO*Trailblazer 1 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 (edited) LOCAL AREA BENCHMARKS Looks like quite a few in the Area no one has recovered yet. My guess is the same U.S.G.S. Edited May 31, 2004 by GEO*Trailblazer 1 Quote
dampeoples Posted May 31, 2004 Author Posted May 31, 2004 It does seem that I have the benchmark area all to myself here, the entire first page of them, and no finds! I kinda did this on a whim, I had loaded the marks into my GPS, and looked for the closest one to my house on the way back in from a cache trip! I need to read up on the USGS and NGS markers, so I can follow the conversation a bit easier Quote
+YeOleImposter Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 THE STATION IS THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF A 160 FOOT TALL MAST So, the photos in the log probably should be deleted since they have nothing to do with this benchmark - right? And instead a picture should be taken of the 160' mast - so probably no reason at all to climb the fence instead need to get back quite a bit to get it all in the photo. Quote

I can almost do that from here! It's right across the street from the local gas station, i'll get one when I visit. Maybe I can go the next thunderstorm, make it art! Quote
+YeOleImposter Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Yes, I just went up to a local 'antenna farm' and it was a bit of a challenge to locate the correct tower. As a matter of fact, the person who logged them before me logged the wrong ones - which was obvious from the description. SA2268 - Description: THE SHORTER ONE OF TWO RED AND WHITE MASTS Quote
