National Geographic Topo Maps

I was playing around with my new National Geographic Topo software and I decided to post a map of my Geocache find with my log entry. Since I have a 60CS and NG Topo does not yet support it, I had to first upload the track to Mapsource with the 60CS and then download it onto my old Vista and then upload the track from my Vista to NG Topo. I emailed NG about the 60CS support and the reply said it would not be supported until this fall. I think it would be cool if more people post these maps so we can know what we are in for before we set out to some remote cache. Check it:

Try the setting in NGTopo for 76S or 76. My 60CS works good on this setting. Except that track points are limited to 5000. But for normal use it works good.

Would I have to get a serial cable for that? I would be willing to do that because I think that the Vista only has 1000 track points so it is limited.

Thanks

By now I think everyone knows my opinion of NG TOPO support. Michael Wildshut is a real piece of work. Still, TOPO is avery fine program. So much so that I ordered my 60CS with the serial cables so I can continue to use TOPO. Michael Wildshut at TOPO support says the USB support is alreadu functional in TOPO, you just need Garmin to give you the driver for your USB cable. I bought the serial cable anyway.

NOTE:

If you open TOPO, and pick a GPSr with settings near the one us use that is not listed, you can then click on Preferences - GPS Settings and change some of the settings to better fit your current GPSr.

Hope this helps.

Help:

I just sold my Garmin Legend to a bud on the condition that the map program will work with the new GPS. I planned to order the Garmin Map60CS tonight. I use National Geographic Topo all the time with the Legend. Now NG tells me it won't support it until late summer. I was going to ditch the idea of the new GPS until I read a few of these threads.

I just need to know:

Can I still send waypoints from the topo to my Gamin Map60Cs if I use a different setting? (What setting would work?)

Can I still send waypoints from the GPS to the map.

These are the only two features that I use all the time. I can easily wait for the new stuff, but these I must have or I'll just keep the Legend.

I would hate to get the new GPS and not be able to use the map.

Thanks for any help. (Kind of a rookie when it comes to this stuff)

I thought NG topo was supposed to have "seamless" maps. Why does it look like the image is split down the center? (It almost looks like the left side has more contour lines than the right side??)

Well, they are "seamless", when seamless means that you can scroll/crop uniterrupted across map area USGS quads on which the NG topo is based. These maps are scanned, and quite often the original USGS maps were made on different dates, by different people, using different equipment. Same would be true of the scanning process. It is quite common to see different "colors" on adjacent quads. But one would think in these modern times, it would be fairly easy to "color adjust" adjoining quads to a standard......guess not.
