  1. Puddlewalker, I did look at the help, the answer was not there, that is why I posted this question here and your response did not do me, or anyone with a similar issue any favors. thanks anyways newbie, Woggs1 Edited to be nice
  2. You can download the POI loader program from here: It is really cool stuff Here is an image I just made in the last few minutes: I can see this still does not replace a PDA, but it is an experiment to see what I can do with POI. Can anyone tell me how to have GSAK output the cache description? I know about %hint but I think that %des is the cache name, and not the cache description. I can't see any other special tags that will export this in a GPX file. Thanks in advance.
  3. Thanks for the help, works like a charm. I was thinking it wasn't a color issue, but how would I know Thanks again Go to the main menu screen and select Tracks/Setup/Color [Enter] I personally like cyan. It contrasts well with the map background and the purple route line, and is easy for me to look at. If you're around water a lot, then another color might be better for you.
  4. I am trying to make my track stand out more on the map page (colorblind) and I can't seem to find the right button sequence to do that. I have the 60cs and I like the default view for tracks on that unit, but now since I just got the 60csx I would like to change it to how the 60cs displays. On the 60csx it is just a very small dotted line. Thanks (note: posted after a search, so don't start)
  5. This guy stole my fish. After we pulled him out of the water he kept trying to drag it back in. This guy was just keeping it mello on the side of a trail very near a cache.
  6. The little nut that holds on the antenna plug-in thing (edit: I think it is called the external antenna connector :end edit) fell off and now I cannot use my external antenna. Does anyone know an easy way to put that back on without tearing the whole thing apart? I suppose my unit is no longer waterproof now and it rained today. Thanks in advance Woggs1
  7. I noticed with my 60CS that I can use both the USB and the NMEA serial at the same time. I have NG topo! 4.0 that I use my USB cable with and Delorme Street Atlas 2005 that I use a USB-serial adaptor. I can run both programs simultaneously and get a position in each program. In the interface menu I have it set to NMEA, but the USB port still functions. Is this because of the new firmware?
  8. Yes, this has been brought up a few dozen times before. And?????
  9. This is what worked for me in XP: First plug in the adaptor without turning on the GPS, then go to Control Panel>System>Device Manager>Mice>+>Right click on Microsoft serial mouse>Properties>General and disable the microsoft serial mouse (the drop down at the bottom). You should also update your driver for the adaptor. Hope this helps
  10. I'll give that a try, thanks. OK, well I've defragged the GSAK database, deleted all items in my CacheMate database and reloaded them from GSAK exports, so that I know the records are all new. Still no logs in the cache pages though! I tried asking for 10 logs, 5 logs, 1 log, but there were none in any of them. Any more suggestions? I had that same problem until I noticed that on cachemate there was a little (very small!) icon for the most recent logs. When I hit that then the logs would open up.

  12. I recommend to owners of a Garmin 60 series GPSR to avoid MS S&T 2005, especially for non-serial laptop use. I am of the opinion that Microsoft is behind the times in offering Garmin USB support in S&T 2005. I come to this opinion by offering the following facts. I use GSAK, that offers Garmin USB support, I have National Geo Topo! 4.0, that offers Garmin USB support and I have USA Photomaps that offers Garmin USB support. Gsak and USA Photomap are to my understanding one-man operations, while National Geographic is a major corporation. I also have a hard time believing that Garmin would change their 60CS USB proprietary standard on a whim. In order for them to do that they would have to change the firmware in all the sold units, as well as the drivers for all their sold software, which would be a customer service nightmare. It is my opinion that the Garmin USB protocol is already set, and available to those software developers who make the effort to include in their products. So, if those other programs can include this USB support for Garmin, why can't Microsoft? USA Photomaps is freeware and it has the support! The way I see it Microsoft has failed miserably in this regard (and in other non-gps aspects as well). Perhaps the reason is that Microsoft products are so buggy and bloated that they just can’t adapt to the dynamic changes in technology in any kind of timely manner. Another thing that I do not like is that nowhere (until very recently on their website) is it documented that MS S&T will not support USB GPSRs. This is just my humble opinion (can you tell I am not a fan of Microsoft? Maybe it has something to do with their stock price a few years back, and that I am an advocate of open-source software but that is another topic).
  13. OK, what is the method to display those geocaching icons? Woggs1
  14. All you have to do is filter the caches you want to in GSAK, then in GSAK File>export>National Geographic Topo! TPG to a known location. Then open up a NGT 4.0 map and click File>Merge TPG and browse to the previous known location. NG topo! will add the waypoints to the map. Cache on- woggs1

  16. The NGT 4.0 does support 60CS and 60C via USB. Earlier versions do not officially support them but there was a way to do it with a serial connector. here is a screenshot from NGT 4.0 with the 60CS option.
  17. The NG TOPO! Streets & 3-D Views expansion pack when installed on a computer that already has any NG TOPO! state series installed will upgrade the State series to TOPO! 4.0. I don't think that they are selling TOPO! 4.0 by itself just yet.
  18. In my opinion it is Microsofts problem. They release MS&T 2005 with no USB support, and all the newest laptops dont even have serial ports anymore! come on, they are supposed to be 'the' software company, and they are relasing products that are way behind in technology, and buggy. I am not happy with Windows XP either, I had a chance to talk to one of the guys on the XP develpment team and he was just apologizing about XP being "unstable" and they will fix the issues in a future OS. And of course we all have to live with Microsoft because they have been accused of using methods that get rid of the competition. I should have known better than to buy a Microsoft product! Just my $.02 Woggs1
  19. Here is what I use to serially connect my 60CS to my laptop: GPS geek Now my laptop does not have a serial port, so I use this adaptor: However, every time I hook up my 60CS to Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 my laptop crashes! It will work for a short period of time and then the screen goes blank and about 5 min later I get the message something like "Windows has recovered from a serious error". So now I am using National Geographic Topo! 4.0 until I purchase Delorme Street Atlas. Woggs1
  20. I for one think that Jeremy should become a Billionaire for his vision and what he has contributed. just my twocents
  21. I want to get a PDA for geocaching but I have not done enough research to determine what is the best one for the sport. I would like to connect my 60CS with USB and I want to use NG Topo also. Any suggestions? Thanks.
  22. I have been using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005 hooked up to my 60CS. There is a major bug in that software that constantly crashes my computer and I get the "Microsoft has just experienced a significant error" message so I am very dissapointed. I think I will now try Delorme street atlas because the Microsoft S&T is like all their other software and full of bugs. But between crashes it works very well, and you can zoom out. Just my 2 cents.
  23. I have been playing with NG Topo! 4.0 and it awesome. The 3D feature stands out in that you can do fly throughs of your routes, or just use the arrow keys to fly over the terrain. You can fly up canyons, along the coast, around the lake, anywhere that you have a State Series map. You can see the view from the top of a peak, or see the mountains above you from down in the valley. You can pan around in circles move to the left or right, forward or backwards. Another great feature is that most of the roads are now highlighted in red and the names are displayed, so you can clearly see them, whereas before they were not so clear. I really think that NG set a new standard for topographic mapping software. If you want to go and explore a mountain range or a park, you don’t even need to leave home anymore, you can just sit in front of your computer. I will try to post some pics if anyone is interested.
