Geocoin Taken By Letterboxer

Recommended Posts

I placed a Geocoin and the same day, within hours a letterboxer found the cache and took the coin and made an entry in the log stating that it was taken.

Letterboxers by the nature of their weird sport do not log their entries.

I think my Geocoin is now in a personal collection of a Letterboxer. :D

Has anyone else ever been stung by a letterboxer? :D

Is this the first shot of a fued? :D

Unfortunately not all Letterboxers understand geocaching and not all Geocachers understand letterboxing. On the flip side of things, I have heard of Geocachers taking the stamps from letterboxes, thinking they were trade items.

There is no feud that I know of. There are plenty of people who do both geocaching and letterboxing. What is needed is better education between the hobbies. Also, it can't hurt when placing a cache to make sure there isn't a letterbox nearby. That avoids a Letterboxer from accidentally finding the cache.

Yeah -- what he said -- weird? Most letterboxes DO have a logbook which is stamped and signed. Letterboxing is the precursor of our sport in many ways. I enjoy geocaching and letterboxing, too, although there are not many letterboxes in our area. I've put out half a dozen letterbox hybrid caches to expand/include the letterboxing flavor of fun in geocaching.

I'm interested in what you don't say in your post. How do you know the guy's a letterboxer and how did you determine the "within hours" part and is there a letterbox nearby? Inquiring minds want to know :D

I'll assume this is the cache:

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d1-552b7e83dd3b

I have no clue what pjmorse means by "letterboxers" since nothing in the cache description indicates that the cache is a letterbox hybrid nor can I find a match on http://letterboxing.org/BoxByRegion.asp?re...Western%20Maine

It seems to me that the coin was simply found by a cacher who doesn't log finds on the site (common enough), doesn't know what a geocoin is (incredibly common), and as such it's probably gone as far as it's going to (unfortunately way too common).

But I don't see anything that backs up the claim that a letterboxer is responsible.

Yep,

That is the cache. But my searching of the Letterbox site shows that there are two mystery Letterboxes in Maine, one of which being:The Ark The other being:The Clean Getaway

Both of which are on "Mt Ararat" which is where "Scott's Sourdough" is also located.

As for my saying that Letterboxing is "weird", probably a bad choice of words, written on shall we say a "warm" moment. :D They do things different, that's all that was really meant.
