I'm considering doing a day following the route of the Olympia Cache machine.

Sometimes I just have an urge to run up the numbers

 

Any comments on places where the route should be changed, caches to skip, caches to add, etc.?

 

MR WD and I are trying to get out of town together for a break. We did look at the old OLY stuff and downloaded the maps but got a new file for the Oly area. I also downloaded the list that MR. G made with the names of caches. We were going to try to do some of these this weekend possibly. Weather permitting.

 

WE would also like any input regarding suggestions or changes. Anyone?

I've been meaning to go down and complete the route. I've got one DNF to resolve and a lot of caches we didn't even try thanks to the snow. The only problem is finding the time, there seems to be something caching related every weekend lately (I'm NOT complaining) ;)

As nice as some of the caches were in the Summit Lake area, and as nice of a drive as SR-108 was, I'd have to recommend that you drop the western third of the route, instead going straight from Honoring WD to Old Shaker Church to Mud Bay Overlook to Port of Olympia. If you're going solo, I'd doubt you'll be able to get all the caches on the route, and this section has more driving time than the rest.

Played hooky today from work, got 17/20 on a mini Olympia/Lacey cache machine, did you guys really do that DVD swap one down the steps and hill in the SnOw-CM?

 

Blew off about ten planned ones in a southern swing below Tumwater and back up into Lacey via Yelm Highway to get back to FW ahead of the nightly jam up at da'Dome. Gives me another reason to go back to Lacey, next time to play some golf with caching on the way back....

 

Man they have some dense population of 1.5/1.0 caches. Anybody know what the heck a 'decon container' is and how big they are ? Didn't have any idea what to look for at a couple locations (which were nicely scenic nevertheless).

Most of the reasonable folks parked at West Bay Beauty and walked the gentle trail up. The rest of the reasonable folks parked at the top of the trailhead and walked the gentle trail down.

 

I, on the other hand... well, my log says it all:

In the Snolympia Cache Machine instructions, I wrote, immediately after West Bay Beauty, ''Walk to Pipe Dreams DVD Swap by The Gold-Diggers GCGVWZ''. Do I actually do this? Nooooooo...

The instructions on the cache page say to ''Park off Rodgers and walk''. Do I actually do this? Nooooooo....

 

I navigate Kfam to the edge of Grandview Drive, and we walk in a little ways. He has some sense -- he suggests we go back to the truck, and find a better entrance. I tell him OK, but do I do this? Nooooooo...

 

Three minutes later, I'm flat on my stomach, dangling from a tree root in my right hand and a limb in my left, mud trickling down my jeans, with my feet flailing for some kind of footing, which consists of muck, wet leaves, and snow. As I'm hanging here, I remember a sign on the structure behind me: 'Danger: keep off'. Do I think that applies to the cliff? Nooooo... It's got to apply to the structure only.

 

I miraculously find some footing, slip a few more times, find a very soggy South Park DVD case on the way down (it's now closer to the cache, since I frisbeed the case down hill away from my footing), and trudge through a creek to what turned out the be the cache location. My GPS now has no signal, but I radio Kfam and wander up hill. He's parked the truck at the RIGHT trailhead, and is headed down. I meet up with him and others, and discuss the hint on the way back down.

 

At the site, I spot the cache and pull it out.

 

Find number 501. A great way to start my second 500 caches. My sixth of 34 finds on the day, and 9th of 41 stops. What a great spot.

I did the same 'ignore the recommended parking' thing, did the same glissade down the slick hill at the top to check out directly under the same pipe, and likely grabbed onto the same brush almost dangling perilously.

 

Fortunately I punted and looked for an alternate terrain-appropriate entrance before seeing if I could fly (actually, I know I can fly, it's the landing part that has me worried...) :o
