For those who stumble upon this thread, you can also subscribe to J-Pass. This is a list put out by NASA that shows the times, flight paths and apparent brightness of satellites, including the International Space Station. The ISS is usually the brightest of all satellites and is very easily seen. Learning to read the list requires a bit of study. But once you understand what the numbers mean, it's easily read.

 

I've found viewing iridium flares to be a frustrating experience. It entails being on the path of specular sunlight rays reflecting off the small solar panels of a satellite. This makes for a very narrow path of observance.
