Downloadable Maps For Hiking?

Recommended Posts

The only maps you can actually download to the Vista are from Garmin's Mapsource CD-ROMs. Mapsource Topo USA is good for getting terrain and some backroad detail but doesn't have a lot of trails. I haven't used any other software so someone else will have to chime in there.

Check out National Geographic Topo for the Northeast. You get the USGS 24,000 quad maps for the 10 northeast states (99.00 for the 10 CD set). While you cannot upload the maps to the Vista, you can exchange waypoints tracks and route and you have great topo printout of the areas.

Now comes the sweet part. NG has a program called Map-X-Change.

People using their program have posted their hikes on many great trails through out the Northeast. You then download the route and you have ready made route to follow. If you want, you can overlay cache waypoints and follow the route to these caches.

Good luck.
