+mrcpu
Is there anyway to access these forums through a newsreader? I'm enjoying alt.rec.geocaching and I'd like to be able to do the same with the Geocaching forums. Eric O'Connor
For an excellent example of how this *could* be accomplished go to Steve Gibson's www.grc.com (Good tech/security info site) The web boards are nice in that you can have images in the post. This can also be their downfall if overdone. With a newsreader you only need to download the messages that have arrived since your last visit. Quote Link to comment

+Harrald
I read about three newsgroups on a daily basis. I haven't posted in one for at least 12 years. Once the Email scavenger bots started trolling the newsgroups I stopped posting. I have a fixed IP address so even falsifying my email wouldn't be enough to stop the spam. At least here your email isn't posted anywhere unless you post it. ==================================== As always, the above statements are just MHO. ==================================== Quote Link to comment

Jeremy Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location I should have been more specific. I don't want these forums on usnet, I would like NNTP access to these forums. News servers can require authentication. Assuming that the opentopic server had nntp access would not mean that it was open to the world. You could either allow read only access for unauthenticated connections or no access for unauthenticated connections. Obviously the opentopic server wouldn't carry all of usenet, it wouldn't even need to talk to the rest of usenet, just use NNTP for access so that people would have the option. I've got an NNTP reader on my palm and in command line linux. Cheers, Rob Mobile Cache Command Quote Link to comment

I don't want these forums on usenet, I would like NNTP access to these forums. That's how Steve has his discussion groups setup. You can read it through your standard html client without any configuration, and/or you can log into the nntp server he's setup for this purpose. It's a seperate server that isn't attached to usenet at all. In fact unless your newsreader allows feeds from multiple servers (I use Forte's Agent and it doesn't) you'll have to create a seperate directory and have the program running with a second window and configuration to access. I'm not even sure if Infopop allows for an option like this, so this conversation might be moot on that ground alone. This is a feature I requested of these forums last fall, but when I ran the idea up the flagpole in this forum not a single person chimed in with support. After a week I deleted the request since there is absolutely no point in going through the trouble for the few dozen people that might have used but didn't speak. Later when I created the usenet group, I expected some old timer net-junkies to add it to their roster but was told in a friendly but clear way that usenet was something from their past and that they won't be heading back anytime soon. For what it's worth, I don't really see/get much usenet spam anymore. I'm fairly aggressive at retiring email addresses (every three months) so I know where the spam comes from. Quote Link to comment
