Homemade cache items

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of setting a cache out that would contain only homemade items. No bombs or food items but things that may interest other geocachers. For example, one of my hobbies is woodworking and I make a lot of novelty items like fancy bowls, goblets, vases, writing pens, etc. Some of my items have Mother Of Pearl inlay. They are unique for sure and I thought I might enjoy finding things like these in some cache boxes. Maybe someone else makes necklaces, decals, bracelets, or puzzles. What do you think fellow geocachers

There's been a couple cachers that put homemade items in caches, including me. One of my hobbies is woodcarving. I designed and care a pin in the shape of a stump. I always refer to it as "Byron's famous stump pin". Another person does some great paintings on rocks. Another is making Geocaching stickers. Yet another makes an "Official Geocaching" card. All these home things seem to be traded for almost as soon as they get into a cache.

The short answer. Go for it.

That would be a great idea. I'm in the works for some "signature items" of my own.

I think the only possible concern is trading of equitable value.

What if someone leaves a sticker from a vending machine for one of you pearl inlay pieces?

From what I hear, most cachers have a "hierchy" of tradebale so maybe this isn't an issue at all.

I've been finding a lot of chainmail type items that are made of metal rings placed together in patterns.

Well I have to admit I think they are very neat and have started a small collection. I always keep an eye out for them when I find a new cache.

I suppose I should share them with other cachers, but they're so cool. I must find them all!

My fiancée makes jewelery and also does computer fractal artwork and also makes stuff out of sculpey clay, and she has left all types in caches. We're both in the "leave it and forget it" category--we hope that if somebody takes what we leave, they enjoy it, and we never check back to see if it was traded for an item of equal value--so that aspect isn't an issue. She has at least on one occasion traded her artwork for "McToys"--she left something for a Lord of the Rings Booger King toy that she thought was cool (but it even talks!!!). Happy cachin'!!! 15T

I like to find unique items. Like most, I'm into the hunt and only trade if something really strikes my fancy (does happen and I make sure I always have a trade item on hand). I've been trying to think of some creative homemade items but haven't come up with anything that I could put in a cache. And before anyone starts thinking the wrong way, my homemade *specialties* are things like jams and jellies, chili sauce, that sort of thing. I'm just not very creative when it comes to art and such. Still working on that ever elusive signature item...

SL of Team PL makes homemade jewelry. She works with inexpensive silver and copper wire but nice glass beads and sometimes semiprecious stones. We've placed / plan to place some of her earrings, bracelets, and necklaces caches we've hidden, and hope people appreciate the effort.

what'dya mean, no fem items???? There are plenty of us "femmes" out here to pick 'em up if YOU don't want them! icon_mad.gif I've often thought there must be some other folks like me who do mostly sedentary crafts and sitting in front of a computer, who find geocaching a good way to get outdoors, get excercise, get the blood circulating again ... I have even considered placing a "crafter's cache" in which only good craft supplies (like a complete kit or whatnot, not cheapy stuff) or handcrafted items could be placed, so I'm game for something like this!

Hey James, I'm not really mad at ya! Want me to knit you a doily? (NOT that I can knit in any case!)

I would love to see crafts in caches. It is my experience that people take all the good stuff and leave crap. (What is with Monopoly Money and keychains?) I had someone leave a muddy split range golf ball they found on the trail. Gee thanks.

Food is another thing. Who would eat food from a geocache?

Anyway yea, crafts would be cool.

I agree with this line of thinking. I occationally leave turquoise stones. Someone could think these have high or low value. I make an ernest attempt to leave something of 'value'. If it's mispercieved, What can I say, I try.

In the arts and crafts department, I love leaving my works. but I've run out of bronze chicken bone key rings. I have taken to engraving on copper, the serial numbers from dollar bills and entering them into www.wheresgeorge.com . it works like a travel bug.

I do not want any food in my caches. The only exception would be is something like emergenC Vitamin C packets. Simply because we're coming up on dehydration season. It's an excellent electrolyte and comes in a sealed pouch.
