DARC
Was watching CNN this morning of the breaking news of another attack by the serial sniper in Maryland. Good overhead shots by a news helicopter and comentary helped me locate the site in Mapsource. I thought that it might be interesting to see other locations for ongoing news events. This topic thread is for recording the Longitudes and Latitudes of specific events in the News. October 22, 2002 5:55am EDT Maryland Sniper shooting location. TX2CA
That would be an interesting piece of trivia. How would someone go about getting the lat/lon of each of the locations where this coward dog has "done his business"... CNN has a chart... ...it is located at: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2002/sniper/index.html Look for a simplified map at the "The sniper's trail" in the lower-right corner under "The Shootings" and "Interactive". DARC
Most of the maps and charts provided by the news organizations don’t show the geography or detail that Geocachers are accustomed to. At the very least we have topographic and satellite photomaps to help us get our bearings. A local fisherman sailed out to the island and claimed it for his nation. With the news media making much of the crisis, the situation was resolved several days later with diplomatic efforts on both sides to leave things the way they are. Goat Island – Claimed by Spain, disputed by Morocco – N35 54.883 W5 25.431 So if you manage to identify the location of some event in the news, please post it as a reply to this topic. +infosponge
Neat idea. I also was watching CNN yesterday and got into ExpertGPS and was able to find the location. I was curious if there were any caches nearby...it would be interesting if the police found a cache while searching the crime scene. Given the rabid coverage and lack of hard information, the cops pulling an ammo can full of odd items out of the woods would probably send them into a tizzy. "That's right, the sniper seems to prefer eating at McDonalds, as evidenced by his cache of happy meal toys found in the woods..." Hope they catch that sicko soon... Quote Link to comment
+travisl
These are the coordinates of the Tacoma site, within 225 feet. The nearest cache is 0.81 miles away, although I've considered placing a cache 427 yards away, in Snake Lake park. "I'm sure she would have been thrilled to find so much pooh in a little metal box." +Alan2
Don't know if this is off topic, but did anyone see the PBS show "longitude" about this Englishman who spent 45 years delevoping an accurate time piece tht could be used on a boat so they could calculate longitude. This was a couple of hundred years ago when only latitude could be figured. Ships coulodn't tell how far out to see or to the next continent however without knowing their longitude. This was really important stuff back then. At the end of the show they switch to a GPS ground station showing all the modern equipment to determine latitude/longitude. But the theme continued - and that is of course GPS also requires the correct time to work properly (using atomic clocks in the satellites). Alan Quote Link to comment
DARC
La Palma landslide site N28 36.544 W17 52.217 The island of La Palma has an inactive volcano on the north side of the island and an active one on the southern side. A serious earthquake on the island could trigger a major volcanic reaction. The eruption would cause the South West side of the island to landslide into the Atlantic Ocean resulting in a Mega-Tsunami against the east coast of the Americas. DARC
N41 55.425 W71 06.365 Whittenton Pond Dam in TAUNTON, Massachusetts A weakened timber dam threatening to give way and spill a 6-foot surge of water into downtown Taunton after 8 days of rain. It last burst in 1968. if Whittenton Pond Dam collapses, so could the Morey's Bridge dam upstream, because it no longer would have supporting pressure on its downstream side. +fotimyr
Not to rain on your parade or anything, but the majority of Wikipedia articles where there are locations involved, have map coordinates near the article headline. And while we're on the subject of sunken warships, check out S09 15.000 E160 00.000. You know what's there? Quote Link to comment
+The A-Team
And while we're on the subject of sunken warships, check out S09 15.000 E160 00.000. You know what's there? Likely nothing at that exact spot, but there are dozens of ships and aircraft in the vicinity of those coordinates. Quote Link to comment
