+eyekwilt2 Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I recently discovered that all of my cache finds from Mid-November to Mid-December had disappeared from the cache pages--different COs, different days. Then one on Jan. 5 was missing. Neither the COs nor I had any communication about the deletions. Luckily, I usually cache with someone else so I was able to reconstruct many of the removed finds--with new logs. Also, I use GSAK which still has my original posts showing when I updated my finds database so I was able to recreate find logs on the caches I had found on my own. The downside is that now GSAK shows them as double finds. I have no idea why this happened, and I am concerned that the Jan. 5 deletion suggests that it might keep happening. I have contacted HQ but have not heard back yet. Any ideas? Quote
+Bear and Ragged Posted January 19 Posted January 19 (edited) Re GSAK. GSAK will have your previous Found It log, and the replacement. You need to delete one of them from GSAK. eta: Found a link. https://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=7007&st=0&#entry42343 Edited January 19 by Bear and Ragged Quote

+eyekwilt2 Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Pretty sure that is not the case. Many of those that went missing were for caches owned by friends and no one knows my password. It is just a mystery that each one that went missing was within one month and then 2 weeks later another was gone. I am waiting for a response from HQ Quote
+eyekwilt2 Posted January 19 Author Posted January 19 Bear and Ragged--thanks for the GSAK info. I have 2 previous caches from years ago that have 2 logs because I deleted one online. I didn't know how to delete one from GSAK. I think I am going to leave the recent ones in place until I figure out what happened. Thankfully it only involves 13 caches that I have identified so far. +JL_HSTRE Posted January 21 Posted January 21 You should receive an email each time one of your logs is deleted. 1 Quote
+eyekwilt2 Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 If a CO deletes them, that is true. The COs did not delete these. They had no idea. Most of them were friends and were as shocked as I was that the logs were suddenly missing. Quote
Keystone Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Could you please provide the GC Codes for some of the caches you're describing? I can check the deleted log history. 2 Quote
+eyekwilt2 Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Ohh, thank you. Attached is the list of all of my finds between 11/15/24 and 12/22/24--all deleted. Then I had this one arbitrarily deleted several weeks later on Jan. 5. GCAXWHE I am just curious what happened. The response from headquarters was basically "sorry for your inconvenience." 1 Quote
+Max and 99 Posted January 22 Posted January 22 My first thought was maybe they were drafts still. But when you said they disappeared from the cache page that meant the drafts were posted as logs. I'm invested in this mystery! Quote
Keystone Posted January 22 Posted January 22 Before investigating the examples, I tested the log deletion functionality through three tests, all done by logging directly on the Geocaching.com website. First, using my Reviewer account, I deleted a log on a cache page from my Player account. Second, using my wife's Player account, as the Cache Owner I deleted a log made by her account on a cache owned by my Player account. Third, using my wife's Player account, a log on one of my Player account's caches was made and then deleted by my wife's account as the log owner. In all three cases, the deleted log history shows both the deleted log and the entry for the now-required "Reason for Deletion" that should be sent to the log owner. Based on these tests, the log deletion and notification process appears to be working as designed - at least for logs entered directly on the website. I then looked at the cache pages and the deleted log history for each of the caches listed above by @eyekwilt2 and found the following: GC9AKY1 - There's a "found it" log dated and entered on 12/23 and no deleted logs. GCB0R3X, GCB0NVE, GCAXRMB - There's a "found it" log entered on 12/23, referencing a prior log that didn't post, and an earlier deleted log with NO "Reason for Deletion" notification evidence. GCHAPK, GC2DRG6 - There's a "found it" log entered on 1/18, referencing a prior log that didn't post, and an earlier deleted log with NO "Reason for Deletion" notification evidence. GCATX90, GCB081R, GCB05TW, GC5DXJZ, GCARR0X, GCAZTV1 - There's a "found it" log entered on 1/17, referencing a prior log that didn't post, and an earlier deleted log with NO "Reason for Deletion" notification evidence. GCAXWHE - There's a "found it" log entered on 1/5, referencing a prior log that didn't post, and a deleted log with NO "Reason for Deletion" notification evidence. I have no explanation for the deleted logs that do not have a record of why they were deleted. Do you log directly from GSAK using the API? If so, you might try asking in the forums at GSAK.net to see if others have had similar problems. Unsurprisingly, your initial logs when the find was fresh in your mind were of higher quality than your replacement logs in January. You may wish to ask Geocaching HQ or your friendly local Reviewer to restore the prior logs and delete the replacements. 1 1 Quote
+eyekwilt2 Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 First, the 12/23 log was never deleted. I over shot the logs. The all occurred between 1l/15 and 12/22 with the Jan. 5th one as an outlier. Thank you so much for looking at these. Yes, I was sick that my original logs got deleted because I tend to write personal logs for caches. I see the original logs (which, by the way all have the happy face showing that they DID post) in GSAK but I don't know how to copy them so I can post them on the webpage instead of my sad sack replacements. The only reason I even discovered these is that one of the deleted logs moved my fizzy up a level and then disappeared. I was complaining to my friend that someone had changed the rating on one of those caches but it was simply the cache that had recently been deleted. And, I was going caching to the same location as some of these and noticed that I didn't have any happy faces in the area. Luckily, I had my friend's find log that showed all of the caches we had found together that no longer had my smiley face. and Third, a friend I told said she had read my logs on 2 of those caches because they belong to a friend of ours and she usually watches for my post if she knows I am going for it. I tried to use the date of my repost as the same day I originally posted but some might have had the second date. I reposted on different dates because I kept discovering caches that had been deleted. The outlier that happened on Jan. 5 makes me worried that it will happen again. Although I post through GSAK when I use my GPSr, these were all posted directly on the cache page. I am confused the by "not posted" comments because they DID post originally. I have included my first log that shows it was originally registered as a find and then it was deleted. Every other deleted log is there in GSAK. It remains a mystery. I guess I will just have to watch my find count very carefully so it doesn't go backwards again! Sigh. Thanks for your help. I am blaming some sort of update that knocked mine out. It doesn't make sense. And, I didn't even know we had to give a reason now to delete a log. New feature for me. Quote
+eyekwilt2 Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 Thanks again. I just got contacted by my local reviewer asking if she could look into it also. I will ask if she can replace the original posts. Thanks for the suggestion. Quote
