Should I always activate the trackables I own?

If I purchase a trackable, a Cache Crate, etc., and receive one or more trackables, should I always activate these, or does that decrease their value if they are otherswise never used and sold, etc., down the road? What are the pros and cons of activating trackables that you don't intend to place in a cache or travel with?

It's totally up to you.  I may not buy one that's already activated (it's less paperwork that way), but others will.

Some people activate them all upon purchase.  If you ever will show one at an Event (for example) because it's interesting or valuable, consider first activating that one.  Or activate it before placing it into a cache, of course.  If you do intend to put it into play, activation is a suitable way to show that you own it.  And sometimes a Trackable gets activated by someone who is not the owner (due to a typo or who knows what else), which can't happen if it's already activated.

But once you activate them, especially if the list grows, next you might want to manage the list to keep your online inventory from becoming cluttered.  There are some things you don't need to mess with if you don't activate them in the first place.

IMHO a non-activated trackable is no trackable at all, because only the owner knows its journey.

PS: Speaking as a geocoin designer I always love to see where my "infants" are travelling. :)

If I was intending on owning trackables and wanted to keep them in a personal collection (not shared with anyone), I'd leave them unactivated.

We have a lot of signature coins and they're all unactivated, so I can hand a newbie their first coin at an event, meeting on-trail, or simply leave it in a cache as swag (and always marked as swag on the packaging...).

If I wanted to share my collection with others for those often-rare icons, I'd activate them and move them to my collection for Discover.

The other 2/3rds has a large collection, enough that we need a hand truck to lug them. She'd bring them to larger events to share with others.

They're all activated and moved to her collection so others can Discover them for the icons.

Like kunarion says, "clicking on buttons" sometimes creates new issues later. If you're not really sure what you want to do yet, leave 'em alone.

If the other 2/3rds ever wanted to sell her collection to another, she'd have to start adoption process on hundreds of coins. A pain-in-the-can.

I personally wouldn't pay the same price for an adopted coin for one unactivated...
