Missing Toronto Girl

Caches within 25 Miles

I did a cache search within a 25 mile radius of where the little girl is missing from in Toronto.

I was wonder if all us cachers could go and check around our placed caches and see if they find any thing that may help in locating anything that may help the police and the search.

I was off today and have checked one of caches in a park close to my home. I am going out to check another location this afternoon.

It sounds like your heart is in the right place, but I'm not sure the police would want you tromping around through the woods near a potential crime scene, or...who knows, maybe right through one without knowing. If you go cache hunting, be prepared to be questioned, and don't touch anything that looks suspicious. Mark a waypoint and call the police.

I was out on a cache on Monday, when the young girl went missing. Even though I was hunting in Waterdown, nowhere near where she went missing in Toronto, I couldn't help but wonder what neartby residents might be thinking, seeing some strange guy heading off into the woods alone. Made me feel very conspicuous. If I were anywhere near that are, I don't think I'd be doing much caching right now.

Cheers!

The points you have made need to be considered and taken into account.

I asked that cachers check there own caches that they know the location. This would I hope not make you stand out as you should know where you are going and could just do a quick walk by to see if anything is out of sorts.

There is millions of places that something could be hidden and the police have no way of checking every where.

From time to time when there have been abductions I've often thought about the fact that myself and other geocachers probably know alot of urban parks and trails better then the average joe. A terrible example of this is the recent Holly Jones case were the missing girl's body was found on the Toronto Islands where there are several caches nearby.

I doubt it would be trampling down a crime scene either, considering that the police would probably be very happy that you found the crime scene for them, as long as you didn't intentionally disturb something.

I sure hope they find this little sweetheart alive an unharmed though icon_confused.gif

I was thinking about this myself. Geocachers all have GPSs, many have radios, and they're experienced at searching. I was wondering if geocachers shouldn't start thinking about organizing a volunteer service to help with searches, much like ham operators organize to provide service in emergencies. Like ham operators, volunteer geoseachers could take courses to identify relevant clues and avoid spoiling evidence.

In a situation like we have now, a geosearch service could provide 10s or more of local trained searchers who could be on the street in hours.

Has anyone else ever thought of something like this?

They have something they were planning like you have suggested but I don't know what will happen now with the election and change of Gov.

LOL! Here's another example of left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing!

Seems that the first person to find my East Don Parklands cache was stopped and questioned by two cops on mountain bikes.
