iPhone App for GPS

Recommended Posts

I have never been before, but tomorrow we are going to a campground that offers this. I have an iPhone. What is a good app to download to put in the coordinates to do geocaching? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have been reading for about 30 minutes and still don't quite get it--I am also about as technical as a fax machine.

Geocaching.com has an official app for iPhone that you can download for free. Just search for Geocaching in the App store.

Do they also have loaner hand-held GPSrs?

Many parks and campgrounds we've been to had GPSrs with the coordinates to their caches (tours mostly) already installed. :)

Learning the app while there may be interesting...

Good luck.

Be aware that the official app only shows "beginner" caches (for free) and may not even show the ones in the campground you will be staying.<_<

Does the campground provide a cache list? You need to enter coordinates into an App, but depending on phone reception at the campground, the Official App may not be able to get the cache info.

If you know which caches you intend to hunt, print them out or save them somehow (such as in the Official App), in advance. This way, in case you discover no phone signal, you may still be able to find caches. Also, remember that only very low-difficulty/terrain caches show on the App for basic members, caches that someone new might be expected to find easily. You may need to visit Geocaching.com for many caches in a campground, if they are higher D/T.

If you have phone reception there, caches available to basic members will be right there on the map. Without phone reception, it's a little tricky, since although you can add waypoints to the Official App, you have to be navigating to a cache in order to have the "waypoints" screen available.

So get the official App. But in case there's no signal (or if the campground provides a printed list), you'll need a way to type info into an App. So you might also get another GPS App. Look in the store for "Free GPS", and in the list, one good App is Commander Compass (the basic version is free). You can type coords and go.
