GCEdo Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 What happened to Earthcache.org? Seems there is no more EarthCache website there? Quote
+cerberus1 Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Maybe they just found it redundant, since everything seemes to be moved to Geosociety.org. Does seem weird that Groundspeak hasn't noticed, or changed their spiel for premium membership though... Quote
+cerberus1 Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 Okay, that's odd, the Eathcache listings on the geosociety page reverts back to the expired domain too. Quote
+geodarts Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 (edited) Hopefully it's just a glitch of some sort. I thought the geosociety page was an older version and that's earthcache.org was valuable in its own right. I would have assumed that there would be an announcement if things were changing. Keystone Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 I know there was a site registry expiration issue earlier in the month, but it was fixed within a few days by renewing the domain registration. Something else must have gone wrong since then. I'm not aware of any plan to change the role that the earthcache.org site plays. Quote
Ranger Fox Posted March 25, 2016 Posted March 25, 2016 The domain's registration was not renewed. The first thirty days, the domain will show as "Pending renewal or deletion". The domain owners can choose to renew the registration during this grace period. After this window, the domain will enter thirty to forty-five day period called "Pending Deletion". Following that, the domain is released back into the market. I studied the process several years ago because I wanted to snap up rangerfox.com when it came on the market. I use the domain as a testing server, so it's rather pointless to go to the home page. I'm not interested in making it a blog as doing so would only add to my workload. Quote
GCEdo Posted March 26, 2016 Author Posted March 26, 2016 Seems this one works, and have complete site preserved there... http://community.geosociety.org/earthcache/home Seems all links work there. Quote
Ranger Fox Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Seems this one works, and have complete site preserved there... http://community.geosociety.org/earthcache/home Seems all links work there. It's not that the site was preserved there, it's that the site was there all along. Earthcache.org was a simple redirect to that URL. There wasn't anything at earthcache.org to begin with. So, at least nothing lost. Quote
+Team Microdot Posted March 27, 2016 Posted March 27, 2016 Having reached 103 EarthCache finds I thought I'd apply for the appropriate EarthCache Discovery Awards and the HTML provided to facilitate display of the appropriate graphics on my profile still points to earthcache.org They really need to tidy things up if they are going to abandon the domain. Ranger Fox Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Aww... The GSA noticed the expired domain name. They renewed it. I had a bid in to purchase it since I wanted to fix it. Guess I can save some money by letting them solve their own problems. Quote

Ranger Fox Posted April 14, 2016 Posted April 14, 2016 Yeah, I know that's a joke. I was going to purchase the domain and fix things by restoring the redirect. I keep wondering if I should put everything I do under one project name, called The Island of Misfit Toys. Quote
