+TeamYoungs
I have only used my phone for geocaching to this point, but I received a Garmin etrex 30x for Christmas, mainly to use for geocaching. Apparently I need to download some maps but the choices are somewhat overwhelming so I am hoping you fine folks can help me narrow down my choices. I am not sure what this unit is capable of, but I am wanting something to help navigate to the cache site from a car, bike, or trail. I don't know if BirdsEye satellite imagery is useful, nor the difference in the topo maps. I am assuming that once I am close to the cache that the compass and cache data will be all I need at that point, but that is just a guess. So basically, for those of you using the Garmin product, what do you use and why, and what would be a minimum to have (to do what I want) and what are the really nice add-ons to have as well. This unit has 3.5GB available storage, but I have no idea how large the map files are. Will I need to get a memory card? Thanks for helping out a GPS newb! Wayne Quote Link to comment

I use OSM (open street map) on my Oregon 600. Size of the map depends on the coverage you want but if you can fit an extra SD card that wouldn't matter much as you can then add more maps and (de-)activate them as needed. There are several threads about where to get them and how to install them. Quote Link to comment
+MartyBartfast
Definitely get a memory card (will only cost a couple of $$) and put maps on it rather than straight onto the device as corrupt maps can cause problems on the GPS, but if the map is on a card you can just unplug the card. I have an Etrex30 and the OSM maps are great for it. Quote Link to comment
+BAMBOOZLE
I like the Garmin City Nav maps on the mini SD card.....snap it in and you're in business with the whole U.S.,....it runs in the $60-$70 range...all points of interest are on it , restaurants, hotels, etc Quote Link to comment
