+PlantAKiss Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 I just recently found a coin in a cache that was impacted with mud and had been like that for quite some time. There were 2 coins actually and I took them home to get them cleaned up. Turns out one is a Pathtag (first one I've seen) and I'm not quite sure what the other one is. Both have rust on them. My question is....has anyone ever found a geocoin that was rusted and were you able to de-rust it without destroying the finish on the coin? I don't want to use an abrasive and something like naval jelly scares me too. It'll never be "normal" but I'd love to get it a little nicer looking if possible. Thanks! Quote
+wmpastor Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 You mentioned (& ruled out) two of the best rust removers. I don't have anything beyond those. A different approach is to stabilize the rust. Clean the coins and let sit until bone dry. Then use a fine artist's brush to apply Rustoleum paint or similar oil-based paint to the damaged areas. +MtnMutt-ProDuckShins Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Once you have cleaned the items to a suitable condition leave them alone, the said rust adds character to them Quote
+The Fossillady Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 The pathtag is yours to keep, do whatever you like to protect it. I have found a few with rust and have just wiped them dry. Quote
+PlantAKiss Posted December 20, 2015 Author Posted December 20, 2015 Has anyone used naval jelly on a coin? I was worried about the enamel paint. Thanks for the suggestions! Quote
