+larryc43230
I just read a Garmin ad in the latest FTF Geocacher magazine that surprised me a bit: "Geocaching gives families more reasons to come together. And with 250,000 preloaded geocaches from Geocaching.com and detailed color maps, the GPSMAP 64 series gives the most preloaded "reasons" to unplug, get outside and get caching." [emphasis added] Has Garmin officially given up its misguided attempt to create an alternative geocache listing service, and when did this happen? I must have missed that memo. --Larry Quote Link to comment

When Garmin was promoting geocaching.com instead of its own silly attempt at a geocaching site, it made their handheld product line stronger, more relevant and innovative with things like Wherigo and Chirp. Would be nice to see a cooperative relationship again. Quote Link to comment
+cerberus1
The "250,000 preloaded ..." was on their own site and on all ads when the 64s came out, so not new. The other cache site's still listed. I don't know anyone who participates any longer. Seemed (to me) interest was dying, by logs from members in their own (now gone) forums. Probably a good move on their part to concentrate on what they're good at. Quote Link to comment

This brings up another interesting question: Did Garmin get all those 250,000 caches with Groundspeak's cooperation and permission? As far as I can figure, they must have. --Larry Quote Link to comment

That's one of many reasons it was pretty much useless. Some cachers I know tried it out as a sort of protest over some of Groundspeak's policies at the time, but once they checked out "the competition" and realized there was nothing really there, they came back to the fold. --Larry Quote Link to comment

It was all a clever way of building that huge data base for the new file gizmo that thier units use to store 250,000 caches or more. Most of that data in those units is no good straight out of the box. Most of the listings on Garmin's site were just dumped there and were never updated. Garmin makes some good units, just delete any data from the factory and store your own PQ's ect. Quote Link to comment

+Mineral2
Garmin's relationship with Groundspeak is still there. You can still get a free one month premium membership with purchase of a Garmin handheld, and the preloaded caches on the Oregons and 64 series always came from geocaching.com. Quote Link to comment
