How do I...?

7 posts in this topic

Hi All

Just wondering if anyone can give me some tips....

I have been reading over logs on recently published caches, and a lot of the logs say when a new chache has popped up on their device...

So, my question is, how do I get these notifications on my device (iphone 5), and are they available for this particular device??

I would love to know when new caches pop up in my area, or even outside my area....

Cheers, K

As a premuium member, you can set up notifications for types of caches within certain a radius of a location that you determine.

you can set it up from here: https://www.geocaching.com/notify/

The notifications come through in the form of emails.

As for getting it to pop up on your device, that is a matter of setting your email service to "push" the message to your device. I have set my iphone to audibly alert me when I get an email has the subject line with the words "[GEO] Notify: (reviewer name) published"

Hope this helps

Thanks for the links to this page, that's great. However..... there doesn't seem to be a selection in the drop down panel for 'publish listing'.....

Am I missing something, or just going crazy??

That's because there's not. There's cache types in the drop down menu. Select a cache type and see what happens. :anibad:

Though unfortunately you have to make separate notifications for each cache types- one for trads, one for multi's etc

How do I.....paint PVC?

I have some PVC pipe I am going to use to put a cache inside to protect it from the elements, but just wanted to paint it a more cammo colour.

I have heard to rough up the surface first, Krylon Fusion Paint undercoat, even dye the PVC.

Are there any tips out there for what is available at Bunnings/Mitre 10/Home Hardware etc etc?

You don't need to "rough up" the surface. Sand it, as you would preparing any surface for painting, to give the surface a "key" for priming. You then should use a plastic primer which you can get in a rattle can from auto supply places such Super Cheap. Its a primer that is used on plastic car body parts such as bumpers, mouldings etc. You need spray only a very light/mist coat on the prepared PVC. Then paint with whatever paint you like.

With constant handling by finders, paint may still eventually wear off, depending on where you've hidden it.

An alternative to paint is cammo tape or vinyl but I can't comment on its effectiveness as I've never used it.

I prefer Rustguard epoxy paints that I can get from Bunnings as it is good on metal as well. Hobby shops have a range of enamels in small aerosol cans if you want a variety of matt cammo colours but its a bit more expensive than normal spray paints so I use it on small cache containers.
