GPS device and account

Hi everyone,

I have discovered geocaching recently and it's a really pleasant activity.

However, I am tracking the caches using my (very) old TomTom device, with a terrible accuracy.

I'm thinking about buying a better GPS, such as the Magellan eXplorist GC or another receiver.

I would like to know if a need a premium account to use this device and send to it the caches locations.

Thanks

Nicolas

No you do not need a premium account. You can use the send to GPS function that is on each cache page.

But you will only get the coords. You will not get any description or past logs that may help you.

Also you will not be able to run pocket queries.

Premium membership is cheap, with that you can run pocket queries and any send to GPS will have full info that you can read on your GPS device.

Beware that if you use Internet Explorer 11 the send to GPS plugin may have problems. I would recommend Google Chrome or firefox browser when using the send to GPS.

Welcome and have fun.

No, you do not need a Premium Member account.

But you would certainly enjoy the added info to the unit that a PM account allows... full description, hints, last five logs, etc.

Mozilla Firefox is currently the best suited for downloading with "Send to GPS". Google Chrome has apparently developed problems as of late. You can use IE if you set the Compatibility Mode to accept geocaching.com website. Find it within the browser Tools menu.

Mac users, by the way, don't have this problem.

Thanks for your explanations and advices.

Indeed, the premium account is cheap.

I agree, the coordinates only can be sometime not enough to find the cache.

The Magellan is provided with one month of free premium account (according Amazon), it's a good thing for trying it.

Well, there's your answer then....try it for a month and see how you like it (I think you will)

I agree. Make good use of the premium membership for your free month and you'll never want to be without it. Spend some time early on getting proficient with Pocket Queries--IMO the most valuable feature. Next most valuable (again IMO) are Bookmark lists, which can be turned into PQs.

While you're waiting for your Magellan to arrive, read everything you can find in the Help Center on these topics; some of it won't make sense until you can actually try it on your device, but get what you can from it. After you read, you'll probably have questions; feel free to bring them here to the forums--there are many helpful knowledgeable people here.
