Design rulz!

Recommended Posts

Since we begin to geocaching, I carefully thought about our "signature"... so I choosed a nickname related to our hometown and a logo able to say a little bit of ourselves.

A good "signature" is halfway to the community recognition... as long with a positive and constructive approach to the game, also.

After that, I got hooked by the geocoin design and production... until today.

I always think about all the stories behind any design... geocoins, nicknames, any design we see on geocaching and geocachers.

This is the place to share all the brainstorming... and hopefully a nest for new ideas and designs.

My first´s nicknames also reflects your aproach...

The most commun was "ilecoguyli"... ecoguy was taken so I add to it an "i" and one "l" to each end.

Over the time it turned into "Leco", cause of some friends.

In Geocaching it´s plain "RuiJSDuarte" because I wanted to be identified right away... If some tima was taken thinking, it would probably be "RJDuarte".

Assuming now, my player profile... as I stated above, our team nickname was based on our hometown, Queluz (a 80.000 inhabitants city, around 10km from the Lisbon centre, and where you can visit the Palácio Nacional de Queluz, often compared with the french Château de Versailles).

Using some kind of "alliteration" I kept the sound, changing only the graphism... so QUELUZ, turn into KELUX

After that, I tried to reflect some of our team's characteristics on the logo, adding a foot from each one of the three of us... mommy, daddy and younger son (the older don't play geocaching).

In the upper left corner, we use the Geocaching logo, and underneath is our nickname using the blue tone from the logo.

During the logo evolution, the "U" was the shield from the portuguese flag, but after that I prefered to place a negative footprint instead.

Sometimes, I use an animated GIF showing the evolution, on the background of our cache listings on the site.

Show us the story of your nicknames also, being an inspiration for others!!

When I started using Internet chat rooms (IRC), I was "Poi-Dog" (the name of my favorite Hawaiian comedian, and also the word for "mutt" or "mixed breed"). Some people in a chat channel changed their names to the "Greek version of their nicknames". So I looked up Greek words for "dog" that would fit the 8-character nickname limit, and decided on "kunarion".

Now there's an upcoming event in Rome (Georgia). So I'm having fun with "Roman" design ideas. Especially Latin. I'm trying out a modified version of my nickname, where in Latin, a "U" and "V" may be interchangeable, but to be used where the changed name may not causing too much confusion.

Okay, I'm intrigued, but I'd like to know what the rules for this forum are. The coin forums I so loved were decimated by over-ambitious policing and crushing of ideas before they hatched that I would rather not invest time in another design forum without at least having an idea of what the rules are up front. Not being a downer, just a realist. B)

That's very amusing, but not what I was requesting. There are a number of subjects that have been shutdown from discussion when it comes to design here in these forums such as commercial caching products that do not pay tracking codes fees, are usable on more than the gc format, are considered taboo because possible commercial competition, etc. If this is to be an open discussion of design for all aspects of caching then that's great. If this is another forum where we can only discuss items pre-picked based on their commercial advantage to Groundspeak then I'll have to pass. I'm not a big fan of censoring art and design. <_<

I'm still confused about what belongs in this "Design" forum, rather than in other forums/threads.

Do geocoin designs belong here, rather than in the existing Geocoins forum?

Do cool cache container designs belong here, rather than in the existing CCC thread?

Do avatar designs belong here, rather than in the existing avatar thread?

Do signature item designs belong here, rather than in the existing handmade item gallery thread?

Is this "Design" forum intended as a place to move design-related threads started in the general-purpose Geocaching Topics forum, the way the photography-related threads are moved to the Photography forum?

Many of the quoted forums and topics have different approaches to the subjects such as commercial, etc. Here you are invited to explain the creative processes... the "descriptive memory", instead of simply placing a picture of it.

As the subtitle explains... this is "A place for artisans, artists and geniuses (even only in our dreams)".

If you are one of those, you will feel welcome here, none explanations needed.

If you are not, you are welcome the same way.

Be welcome!
