4crazycachers
I am traveling to France and Italy and trying to figure out if it is possible to use my GPS (Magellan Explorist GC) when I go there. Any advice on this or other ways to use your GPS in France? Thanks! 4crazycachers Quote Link to comment
Panther&Pine
Well GPS stands for Global Positioning System so it works around the globe. The issue may be in maps, you'll probably only have the basic maps to work with. Quote Link to comment
kwcahart
Why do you think it would work any different there than it would in the US? It still uses satellites to locate your position, and if you have a computer to download caches, you are all set. We just got back from Scotland, Ireland, England, and Germany. Works just like it did here. Quote Link to comment
Redwoods Mtn Biker
It will work fine, but may take awhile to acquire satellites after flying so far. Make sure you leave it on for a full half hour before leaving so it fully downloads satellite almanac data, then prepare to leave it on, in the open (or at least in a hotel window) motionless for a half hour upon arrival. +phlatlander
We used our Oregon550 while in Europe in the fall, on the Danube from Budapest to Nuremburg, then on to Prague. On the flights over, about every hour I would turn on the O550 and hold it against the window until it displayed satellites and a reasonable Lat/Long. When we arrived in Budapest the unit "knew" where we were and worked fine for the next two weeks. I use OpenStreetMaps and they were excellent for walking. Didn't try driving though. +Redwoods Mtn Biker
Just be sure you're on a airline that allows GPS! Quote Link to comment

Viajero Perdido
If you've never had to load cache coords into the unit because they came pre-loaded, you'll have a bit of work to do getting that all sorted out. Have fun. Quote Link to comment
phlatlander
Prior to our trip I spent a couple of months of GoogleEarth research to create a .gpx file of various restaurants and sites, complete with geo-tagged photos - worth the effort. Quote Link to comment
Postholedigger
I just wish someone would ask this same question about traveling to Australia just so I can tell them just to use their GPS up side down while they're there... Quote Link to comment
